I get them in my patio all the time. one day I noticed around 5 different webs with tiny black widows on them. I moved the fake plant to try and clean a bit and a huge one came walking out. still get the odd one on occasion.
we get spiny orb-weavers as well

SCARY. I mean, I feel bad for them, because they're just trying to survive like everybody else. But seriously, scary.
My folks get golden argiopes every year at their house. They're gorgeous, exclusively outdoors, and most importantly, stationary. Best kind of spider. I went to Maui recently and a woman on the road to Hana had more than 10 of them living in her ice cream stand. I like them, but not that much. They were dropping down all around her head. Crazy hippie lady. She made good coconut ice cream, though!

I'm okay with the ones who live in webs because chances are I'll always know where they are. Now when it comes to the ones that live on walls, ceilings, floor etc. I have a big problems. Especially when they can get so big. We had this gigantic Huntsman in our house a week aho. It was very similar to this beast: *Shudders* Everyday I'd make sure to scout the house looking for it. Just so it wouldn't get a chance to freak me out by catching me off guard.Okay my heart is pounding just looking at that picture. Your post gives me the impression that instead of burning your house down just to insure that that monster is dead, that you just lived with it and hoped for the best and I just can't fathom how that's possible.

I'm really, really glad black widows don't live in this part of the country. My response to seeing one would be to piss in my pants, hide in a corner, assume the fetal position, and pray to every god imaginable for it not to eat my soul.

So how big can these Black Widows get?
We get Red Backs here which appear similar, and are also deadly, but they tend to be pretty small.

If I ever saw that shit in my house I would run out the door, down the street and probably a few blocks further, and then never move back in.

I think part of the reason people are afraid of them is that they have such a memorable name and look. Sure, they are very dangerous, but it's not as bad as getting a snake in your house or something. A snake can strike, while you pretty much have to let the spider bite you.

Guys, it's just a damn Huntsman. They're harmless. It's the Funnel Web Spiders that you have to watch out for. highly venomous and very angry.

And their fangs are like hypodermic needles, if I remember correctly. I'm not sure of that. The only things that I know about the SFWS is that they are highly aggressive and are the only breed of spider that will chase people down and bite them again. They can also survive for a day on the bottom of a pool and will bite as soon as they are taken out. but let's face it, Australia is f***ed. That's one of the most venomous critters in Australia, the Ikurandjii Jellyfish. Apparently the venom is the most painful thing that you could ever experience.
