I think he was trying to get someone to be as famous as Austin, to replace him. Besides, i dont think it would have sat well with the Board of Directors storyline wise if Vince just fired the biggest cash cow since Hogan.

He did fire him, Judgment Day 1998.
When Austin was "rehired" a week later, he got a brand new contract where Vince couldn't fire him no matter what he did.

He wasn't trying to get rid of Austin. He just didn't want him to be WWF Champion and representing the company in that spot, as he was a "public relations nightmare". The feud got so personal that Vince kept Austin around just so he could mindf*** him with the most convoluted schemes (the higher power angle) known to man.

Vince the character didn't want to get rid of Austin, atleast not unless he absolutely had to. He wanted to break Austin. He knew Austin was money, and Vince wanted to control him instead of having him run around as a loose cannon.

McMahon vs Austin also really helped The Rock, IMO. He became the "poster child" for what champion should be.

Because in pro wrestling, you fight in a cage, not fire people.
