I remember when Alundra Blaze left for WCW and they got rid of the Women's Title. I also remember Alundra being the top women's wrestler, even though the division was more or less Alundra and others. Even when Sunny came in, she was more considered a valet instead of a wrestler and reading the WWF Magazine, Alundra had a column and she challenged Sunny. Alundra came in eventually after the WWF dropped the women's title in the late 80s (I even have a VHS, the Women of the WWF from 1988). So WWE never had a strong women's division.
It's almost like in MMA. Dana White was thinking about dumping the 145 weight class in Strikeforce after Christine Santos got caught with drugs. So, the lack of stars is a big issue. When Sable was popular, she needed something to keep her as a major role on TV, and bringing in the Women's Championship. She also had Jacqueline to work with, who was very experienced at that point. They then brought in people around Sable until Sable left.
In 2001, they had Trish Stratus, and she was the top star. They had women around her, some great heels like Victoria, Jazz and Molly and other baby faces like Lita, Jacqueline and Gail Kim later on. WWE needs that one female baby face. I've been talking about how Mickie James and Cheerleader Melissa are your great heel/babyface duo who could work together on all the house shows and having Mickie as your top baby face. Mickie was the closest thing to a top baby face after Trish left, and her leaving was a big blow. They need a new top baby face who is talented, because they can't put untalented people out there and think people will get behind them. Kelly's over because she takes a good ass kicking, and nothing to do with her ability. They can't have any untalented or slightly untalented people ever again. If not, then they might as well get rid of all the divas except Eve and AJ, who seem to be attached with other people (even after Smackdown, my guess is AJ will still be slightly attached).

It can't be that. Because if it were the case they would've hired those talents years ago instead of rejecting them for not being pretty enough. Don't get me wrong, I don't think this will lead to them changing their hiring practices anytime soon but you look at what they've done since Kharma left and by the end of last year, I don't think it'd be outlandish to say that they regretted their choices to fire the Divas they had. Kharma came in and she was shiny, new. When she left, they stopped trying. I think it's at least not out of the question to say an influx of new women would motivate them a bit. For a few months anyway, or at least to get them back to wrestling more regularly. If they keep this up, 'no Divas match' will be the new normal. On the broader point though, I am inclined to think that the Divas they have aren't worth bothering with by and large - the ones on the main roster. I feel like like the writers share this view and that's why they've taken little chances with them. I don't think they regret letting those women go. There were bigger backstage reasons why they released a lot of their talented wrestlers over the past few years, (and there were very few of them anyway) and the women that were released back in 04--well, that was such a long time ago. Even if Gail hadn't gotten (rightfully so I think) fed up with the way they book/treat the divas, I don't think they would've used her properly. She either would have partnered with Beth and Naty and gotten rolled up or squashed etc... I mean, let's be real here. They never wanted Mickie to be the face of the division. If they did, she wouldn't have spent 2007 on houseshows or on Sunday nights doing whatever while Ashley, Melina, and Candice took the majority of the spotlight and then started splitting it with Beth. Then they were always working on Michelle etc... At least Michelle, Melina and Beth could work, but the division has never been about pushing the most talented wrestler.

To be honest, I didn't even notice that there was no match. I gave up on that division.

Then they were always working on Michelle etc... At least Michelle, Melina and Beth could work, but the division has never been about pushing the most talented wrestler. Sure. I agree with you and I agree that they never fully capitalized on Mickie's overness at around mid-2008, when she was getting louder pops than most of the guys in the midcard. But it was a better time. Mickie/Beth, Mickie/Kate, part one of Beth/Melina, hyping the hell out of Maria's simple draft to SD - I think they look at the women they have right now and realize they can't give them even that kind of spotlight. That's what I mean by 'regret' rather than the idea that they're actively kicking themselves. They're cognizant that the division sucks. Rather than try and fix it, they punish the women and whatever Diva fans still exist. It's WWE - their desire to fix their mistakes only extends so far.

Maybe it's the simpler reason that the big European tour starts tomorrow and the TV was mostly booked to use as few of the people working that tour as possible. The women who get booked for the tour usually work the full two weeks, so they need to rest up

I don't think we'll see a diva who gets the kind of pops Mickie got. Kelly is a horrible face of the division. Sure, she'll get somewhat of a pop when her music comes on, but she can't excite a crowd during her matches like a Mickie or Lita. They could try to make a huge face out of AJ or Natalya, but it won't work. They've pretty much destroyed Natalya's credibility with the farting and constant jobbing, and it'll be impossible for AJ to get over with the fans with the massive amount of support for Bryan.
And then you look at all the other face divas: Alicia's pretty poor, Tamina can't connect with the fans, WWE can't bother pushing Layla, and it'll be hard to push Kaitlyn given her sheer obscurity. That only leaves Naomi and Audrey down in FCW. Audrey's good, but not excellent.
That's were Naomi can capitalize. She has all the ingredients for a successful face. She can work, she can connect with the fans, she can hold her own on the mike, she's family-friendly, she's beautiful, and she's exciting enough to get fans interested in her. If WWE can just capitalize on this excellent talent they have, then they'll have a face that they can get behind.
*sigh* I just think WWE has dug themselves into a whole with the divas, and it's hard to support something that gets very little support.
