Huh. I suppose it COULD be. How does it feel to the touch? It almost looks like charcoal, but it'd probably be obvious if that was the case. You should see if you can find a geology forum or something to ask in, they would be more likely to know.

no idea of it's mineral content, but it definitely looks metamorphic in nature.

While I can't discount anything... it definitely looks more like charcoal to me than anything else. And if a chunk that big is under two pounds, that'd be closer to charcoal than true rock. If it is a rock, I'd probably put my bet on slate.

If it was charcoal, though, I feel like it'd probably feel more obvious, since it'd be crumbly or greasy to the touch, and it seems to not be rubbing off on the towel he has it on there.

It's very smooth, not dirty at all, but I can write my name with it. Maybe it's graphite?

Maybe, but if it was a rock, it'd probably be heavier than 1.5 pounds. If it were a meteorite, I'd say it'd probably be a lot rougher, heavier, and in a crater of some size. Those things don't just land on the surface, they're hitting earth at terminal velocity, and one that size would leave a pretty sizable hole. edit: Since you said you could write your name, that makes me think graphite, like you said, or charcoal still. Of course, those are both carbon, so it's a good guess.

Yeah, some sort of carbon would be the most likely guess.

It's a fossilized piece of crap. Honestly, though, I really don't know. It looks cool, though.

It might be one of those creatures from Apollo 18. Hit it with a hammer before it's too late!

Maybe you can find a geologist near where you live and have them take a look at it?
