Ok, help me out here.
A guy in the indy fed I am training with, who is usually pretty knowledgeable, swears he remembers a time in the WWF history when Ron Simmons was the WWF champ, but it was an accident and only happened for a week. He says Ron had a match with the champ at the time (he doesn't recall who the champ was, but said it was mid 90's and it was the 'winged eagle' belt, so I'm thinking Shawn or Sid) where something went wrong, the champ got hurt, and Ron had to pin him. He says this was probably a house show. Then Ron had the title for a week and dropped it back. He thinks this was common enough knowledge back then that someone called into Livewire and asked Faarooq about it, and he got pissed off and tried to act like it never happened to protect kayfabe. Does this story sound familiar to anyone?

I have never heard this. His only title match I can remember off the top of my head was against Undertaker in the summer of 1997, but Faarooq lost.

I've never heard anything about this either; you'd think something like this would have definitely gotten around had it happened though, whether through the Observer or some other outlet.

This is the first I've heard of it. I wouldn't put too much stock into it either, since he would have been the first ever black WWF Champion, so there's no way they wouldn't have made a big deal about that or, at the very least, simply acknowledged it.

He was WCW Champion in 1992. But, save for the aforementioned shot vs the Undertaker which only served to further his feud with Ahmed, he didn't whiff the Main Event scene ever again. Hell, I don't recall him even getting SHOTS at the IC title.
He did hold the Tag Titles a handful of times in the APA, I think like 4 or 5 times.

I also have a friend who swears blind he remembers Ron Simmons holding the WWF title. I won the argument in the end with concrete proof he at least was never recognised as such but still, quite an odd coincidence.

I'm not gonna argue with this guy because he is BIG...and very proud that Ron was the first and only black WWF champion....I don't think anything like that ever happened, but I'ma let him have this one LOL

He's probably thinking of Ron as the WCW champion, because they did make a pretty big deal about that at the time.
There was also a match with - I think - the Undertaker(?) where Farooq had a title shot and was really hyping up that he was going to be the first black WWF champion. Your friend could be remembering that and just having one of those false memories that it actually happened.

If he's that big, probably best not to argue but yes, this is absolutely the first I've ever heard something like this and I'm extremely dubious about it. WCW champ, no problem. WWF no.

Could he be getting mixed up with Men on a mission accidentally winning the tag titles? (i imagine they got into a whole heap of trouble for doing that)

Isn't it the worst when someone "definitely remembers" something that you know didn't happen? Especially with wrestling, it happens all the time. My cousin swore to me that Cody Rhodes pinned Triple H clean on Raw during the Legacy angle in a one on one match.
LOL, come on.

Plus the only time Farooq was on Livewire was in the fall of '96 to debut the Nation of Domination gimmick. This would mean Farooq would have had to have held the belt as Modern-Gladiator egg helmet Farooq.
What I HAVE always wanted to know is in July '97, Mean Gene said that in Japan at a house show they crowned a "NEW WCW Champion" and that the answer was only available on his hotline. No mention whatsoever of this was made elsewhere on TV or in PWI months later, so I've always wanted to know what he's talking about.

He was the first ever black World Champion of a major promotion. But it was WCW, not WWF.

He was in the finals of the 1996 and 1997 tournament for the vacant belt(losing to Marc Mero in the first, and Owen Hart in the second) and had a shot against The Rock at the April 1998 PPV. He held the tag team titles with Bradshaw 3 times.

I'm assuming this is referring to the WCW Women's Cruiser title, which was the title of a partnership between WCW and GAEA Japan. It was soon forgottne by WCW but existed in Japan for about a year, I think.
