As Punk has said "it's the best match any company can do." I, personally, believe this to be the case also. The feud writes itself, not adding the fact that these two are both top 5 people on the mic of the last 12 years.
When it comes down to it, I think everyone working for the E is completely aware of the ball they'd be dropping if they didn't put on this match. I think it ends up being a match at WM 29, and all will be happy.

My only problem is this:
Punk's not really big enough (yet) to justify going over one of the biggest names ever, and Austin winning would make Punk look terrible. A nasty double-edged sword if ever there was one.

Austin hasn't wrestled for 8 years.
8 years.
Id hardly say WWE are 'dropping the ball' if this never happens. We would all understand if Austin didn't want to get in the ring again.

It would be an awesome match, and I'm sure the build-up would be amazing. That said, as time goes on, the match becomes less and less of a possibility. Plus, as Ichi mentioned, Punk isn't at that "Cena facing the Rock" or "Rock facing Hogan" status yet; yeah, he's high, but not permanently perched yet. If he lost, that could deal something of a blow to his momentum, and (dare I say) what are the odds Austin decides he doesn't want Punk to go over?

I think this could possibly be a good match but not as good as some Punk fans think. If he lost, that could deal something of a blow to his momentum, and (dare I say) what are the odds Austin decides he doesn't want Punk to go over? This. Austin praises the guy on twitter but that doesn't mean he'll lay down for him.

I think Austin wants to do the match, and I'm sure he understands he'd need to let Punk win.

Both men have expressed some sort of desire to do the match, and this match would be money. WWE would be stupid to pass this up.

As Punk has said "it's the best match any company can do." Not only do I not agree with this, I have no desire to see that match or Punk and Austin arguing about the pros and cons of alcohol consumption.

I think the feud would grow out of the straight edge/beer drinking catalyst after some promo work. Both are tremendous on the mic and can make the feud whatever they want it to be.

I really want to see it, and I hope it happens. One of the few "dream matches" left. what are the odds Austin decides he doesn't want Punk to go over? I doubt there's a chance of that happening. As far as I can tell, Austin respects the wrestling business, and I'm sure he would realize that putting over Punk would be for the good of the future. It's not like he's Hulk Hogan or anything... And before anyone brings up Austin leaving instead of jobbing to Brock as an example -- I'm sure his problem wasn't simply with putting Brock over. From what I've heard, Steve just didn't think it made sense to do the match and lose clean on a random episode of Raw with no build-up and piss away a potential big money PPV match on free TV.

Yes, as long as the fans keep making noise about this. Seen signs from the t.v. audience indicating the dream matchup. If Steve insists on going over, I'm sure Vince can give him a number that'll change his mind.
btw, your bottom avatar has been distracting me while I've been typing up my post. Nicely played!

It's not a possibility now. The only way this works is if Punk is a heel and he just runs down Austin verbally over and over again and then maybe does something awful to him. Then Austin plays standard WWE babyface during the match and "overcomes the odds", stunner, 123, we go home now.
In this current alignment the match is just too damn tricky. You're going to see why next week.
