They should set off the home run statue for that base hit.

The Cardinals apparently were miffed at how this opening game was not really about them.
NEW STADIUM, MIAMI MARLINS, OZZIE, JOSE, FOUNTAIN IN CENTERFIELD!
oh BTW the reigning champs are also playing.
Maybe they got miffed.

Anyone else get depressed as soon as they trotted Ali out there? I haven't been able to get into the game since.

It's like the opening of Jacobs Field, except that Kyle Lohse is not Randy Johnson.

Maybe they got miffed. I can't entirely fault ESPN. Aside from being defending world champions, there is nothing sexy or nationally appealing about the St. Louis Cardinals. Mike Matheny, an obscure catcher whose best season had him hitting .261, is managing instead of the legendary Tony LaRussa. Albert Pujols, the most recognizable face the franchise has had since Stan Musial, took his talents out west. Their opening day starting pitcher is a journeyman. The best returning player from their World Series-winning team is David Freese. They signed no marquee free agents in the off-season, unless you count Carlos Beltran, which means you are stuck in a time machine. Sad as it is, the Marlins had all the appeal to draw in casual fans. New look, new stadium, new manager, big-name acquisitions. They've got all the hype surrounding them. Whether that's deserved or not, we'll know in a few weeks. But for now, the Marlins are what brought in the eyes tonight, not the Cardinals.

I don't need a few weeks. The history of both franchises makes me say "no". ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Being stuck in a time machine just means we'll be World Champions over and over and over and over. That and I don't see the need for teh sexy free agents. We didn't need anything...the majority of our roster was set. All we needed was bullpen help and one bat. What I could do without though is the smartasses that commented on my photo of a Rangers fan I work with that had to wear my Cardinals shirt...by thinking they're witty by bringing up the Red Sox sweeping us in '04...AGAIN! That's what I get for marrying a girl from Mass...her family can't let that moment go. Ever. I so kindly reminded them that it took them three times to finally beat the Cards in the World Series, 11 rings > 7 rings and that I had to be careful using my son's Red Sox bottle to feed him since the damn thing presents a choking hazard. That's right, if they're gonna keep on bringing up '04 I'll keep bringing up '11 until my dying days. Go Cards! Repeat! Woooooo!!!!! (Also, I kind of wish the Marlins were playing anyone but us opening day. I've always had a soft spot for those fishies.)

At least it's a ballpark for baseball. They played 20 years in a football stadium and only had 2 years where the fans really showed up. Kind of hard to get the fans to care at all when you just implode the team after you win the World Series every time. I know lots of people that gave up and despised the owner because of it.

When they had Ali do the torch ceremony for the 96 olympics, they had him right there next to the torch and ready to go. Not to mention the Parkinsons hadnt completely taken him over yet. Last night was just really sad. The poor guy just sat there trembling and you could hear the crowd get more and more uncomfrotable

Red Sox relief pitcher Justin Thomas wins the honorary Bryan Corey award for "Pitcher I've Never Heard of Before Today, Yet He's on the Opening Day Roster". The last recipient of this award was Scott Atchison in 2010.

*sigh*
I wanted to break up with the Red Sox, but they've managed to beg me into a second chance.
I just hope they realize they're on thin ice

I was disappointed in the FSN Detroit opening. They were talking about how the Tigers and Red Sox were old rivals, but they didn't show any highlights of their fight from a couple of years ago.
