Like, if he hadn't had to retire. How would things be different? Would Bryan be champ on Smackdown? Would Henry be so much more of a star than he was?

If Edge hadn't retired I think del Rio, Edge and Christian would've traded the world title a few times instead of the Orton show followed by Henry's ascension. Sadly, Edge retiring may have been the best thing to happen to Henry and Bryan.

Edge would have been booked like Orton on Smackdown (victorious in a feud with Christian, then puts over Mark Henry), and Randy would've stayed on RAW. Consequently the #2 babyface on RAW spot would've never opened up, and CM Punk would remain a heel on the fringes of the main event scene, and del Rio would've been pushed a lot harder/booked stronger during his WWE title bouts over the summer, because he'd be the main storyline instead of a sideshow behind Punk's revolution.

This is what I feel would have happened seeing as they dropped hints that E V C was the way they were going
- Edge V Del Rio for the title at Extreme Rules - Edge goes over with a little help from Christian - With ADR off to Raw, Edge needs a new challenger - Christian wins a #1 contenders match and it starts a face v face program - Edge V Christian for the title at OTL with Christian shockingly going over - Christian has his celebration on SD with Edge (who seems really bothered, but is there none the less) - At some point Edge snaps due to the fact that he was defeated by the Rhoda of the team - Edge V Christian at Capitol Punishment with Christian going over - Edge snaps even more because he was defeated again by Christian - Edge V Christian at MITB, with Edge going over - Heel Champion Edge then enters into a program with Orton

Del Rio would have won the World Heavyweight Championship. Edge & Christian become the new DX, constantly headlining shows, but hardly ever in the title picture. They become tag team champions by beating Heath Slater & Justin Gabriel. Edge & Christian are the top two faces on SmackDown, #3 and #4 behind Cena and Orton on RAW and overall.
Edge & Christian are placed randomly in tag team feuds booked for the purpose of building up young superstars. Rather than turning face against the Miz, Alex Riley gets his main event push by teaming with his mentor against the two veterans.
Zack Ryder does not turn face either. Z!TLIS is used as a platform to bash Edge, as Ryder attributes all of Edge's success to himself and Curt Hawkins. Ryder gets his mega push as a heel, facing Edge one on one with Hawkins in his corner, and Christian in Edge's corner.
Down the line, Cody Rhodes enlists the aid of Ted DiBiase to help him "resurrect the tag team division." Rhodes makes his ascension up the ranks by getting multiple pinfalls over Edge, but they too fail to claim the tag titles.

Edge retains at Extreme Rules. Edge & Christian continue to be a semi-team again, perhaps even winning the tag belts since...well, they were at their all-time low this year anyhow. Christian manages to get a title shot against Edge. Probably by beating Del Rio in a last chance #1 contender match. The angle starts as a friendly rivalry between the two tag champs who are also lifetime best buds.
Basically, Edge becomes the Orton in the Christian/Orton feud of this year. Christian would win it legit early on, but then at the following PPV, he'd lose it. The rivalry up until that point was friendly. But then Christian begins to turn, and eventually in a triple threat ladder match the belt gets passed off to either Del Rio or Orton. Edge and Christian have a few more titleless matches. Orton and Del Rio is the championship program closing out the year. Del Rio gets the belt by TLC. Mark Henry probably never gets pushed. Daniel Bryan doesn't even win MITB.

That's a huge warpage of time and space, the panic moves they did because of this really altered the booking hugely. I don't even think Punk would be working for the company, he'd be on vacation.
They probably would have tried to shove an Orton turn and yet another Orton/Cena feud down our throats.
Probably would have had the Orton/Christian feud be the Edge/Christian feud, with the difference being that the angle would have started with Christian costing Edge a 3 way match with ADR, either in keeping Edge from winning, or beating Edge himself, instead of Christian getting "screwed" by Long into facing Orton. But the end result would probably be the same, I wouldn't be surprised if they cribbed whatever they were planning into that.
