So, why does the WWE keep doing this? This isn't another thread wondering about Cena's health or wanting him to turn heel, this is a thread wondering why on Earth the WWE seems intent on making Cena the only truly shining star on the full-time roster.
Without going into specific cases, they've had zillions of opportunities to build up new stars, but three out of four times they've been heels and been treated as fairly throwaway in the grand scheme of things. After tonight, who are the main event babyfaces? You've got effectively one for each show. Cena. Sheamus. And then you have Rey, who's basically on borrowed time until his knees give out completely.
The roster is practically 90% heels right now, and Christian and Kofi are basically the only midcarders with any shred of credibility left. Maybe Zack. Barely.
What the hell is Vince trying to DO?[/b]
Cena's been unambiguously on top of the WWE for what seems like an eternity now, with seemingly no end in sight. I get that he's the ultimate company man, that he pretty much sacrificed his marriage to be married to the company, but seriously, what is so hard about making sure that you're not royally f***ed if Cena tore a muscle or was in a car accident or something. I mean, other than the fact that he'd probably no-sell it.
I just don't get why Vince keeps going to the well. It's going to run dry one of these days whether he likes it or is ready for it or not.

Merchandise sales, that's what it boils down to.

At this point, half convinced that Vince wants to make sure that when he dies he's taking WWE with him.

Imagine the panic if Cena had a career threatening to endng injury in the next week or two.

I believe that Vince thinks their next Golden Goose is actually Sheamus.

Sheamus is being groomed. Indeed. He already has gotten the Cena reaction of getting booed by some of the hardcore audiences. It have to think that this mixed reaction is what WWE really wants out of a lot of their acts.

They are grooming a new guy...that young and upcoming comer...Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
They are trying with Sheamus maybe they'll try with Dolph later this year. Hopefully one of these guys will stick eventually.

I'm just going to cut and paste something I wrote a month ago. The parity of audience responses to Cena, the 50/50 thing, means that WWE won't take a risk with changing his character because he's getting the best of both worlds. But factually, that isn't true. He's only getting 50% of a babyface reaction and only 50% of a heel reaction. You want someone to be super-over? They need at least a 90% reaction either which way, face or heel. The ambivalence of Cena's booking is losing out on a strong audience reaction. WWE thinks 50% plus 50% is 100%. But how they book it, it's more like 50% times 50% is 25%. Big difference.

It have to think that this mixed reaction is what WWE really wants out of a lot of their acts. But he hasn't gotten the Cena reaction of getting cheered by the casual fans. That's the problem. I'm not saying he isn't over, but he's hardly getting the reactions of someone that's going to be taking over as #2 face. Plus Sheamus has been playing the part of cookie cutter babyface for months. I don't think the mixed reactions are what the WWE is going for with him.

Well Sheamus isn't "young" himself. He's only 34 but in wrestling years I'm not sure we can call him the next big thing since he's only a year younger than Cena. I'd think if they did want to hand pick the next big star and not have it happen naturally they'd go with a much younger person to lead the charge that is at least mid to late 20s. Gotta milk those cows for every drop!

Merchandise sales, that's what it boils down to. Which is dumb. I mean yeah they got burned on turning Austin which is probably a big reason they're keeping Cena a face but at the same time Cena is nowhere near as universally loved by the audience as Austin was when he turned. Cena is basically in mid-'90s Hogan camp where he still gets cheers but a significant portion of the crowd can't stand him. And like Hogan turning Cena heel would be a great way to freshen up both the character and the entire product but WWE has no reason too because they're in their little 2.9-3.3 groove, they've got no real incentive to do better because there's no real competition and they're so paranoid about ratings dropping/people leaving if they turn Cena because that's what happened over a decade ago with Austin. Cena NEEDS to be turned. He should've been turned tonight. He should've been turned last week. He should've been turned a long time ago but it's never going to happen because WWE's content with just coasting along and completely paranoid about getting burned if they try and turn their top face again. It's s*** but I guess we should probably realize that we're going to deal with it until the day Cena retires. Edit: Bah shows what I get for only skimming the OP. But basically take everything I said and remove the "heel" stuff. WWE's going to stick with Cena because they really have zero incentive not to. They've got a guaranteed crowd that's not going anywhere no matter what and as long as they have that they probably feel like they have no reason to worry about anyone else but Cena.

Cena, Sheamus and Rey Mysterio are really the only credible "full-time" faces I see now. Rey might not even be included on that list. I'm not counting guys who are in the middle but let's be serious. Say another invasion happened, the only ones who can do anything about it kayfabe-wise is Cena and Sheamus. Everyone else is being stomped into the ground and hell there's so many heels out there let alone ones who are so dominating it almost looks ridiculous at the outcome to these things. When Dean Ambrose debuts he'll clearly be a heel, look at these other FCW stars being brought up. They can't hang with the big dogs yet, they have to be trained.
I'm not sure what they're doing but it's looking bleak for the faces. They need to develop well. You have "heels" such as Del Rio, Bryan, Big Show, Ziggler in a way and the newly heel again Punk. Not looking very even at least to me it's not.
