I found a video of a shoot interview excerpt with Val Venis talking about Owen Hart's death at Over the Edge 1999. On the sidebar there was the Owen Hart tribute show on Raw the following night. So I'm re-watching the show and it's just... it's really sad and painful to watch, knowing how much Owen meant to everyone. It's hard not to cry when Mark Henry reads his poem. I remember this night so clearly, especially the Rock's promo to Owen and Austin's closing of the show. It's crazy to think that he's been gone for 13 years. What are people's thoughts about this show?

I actually loved it. One of my favorite Raws of all time, even though I saw it after it aired. I mean, I didn't love it because it was a happy occasion or anything, but it felt like such a genuine tribute, and I really like when things go off-script and people are able to express their true sentiment, especially when this business limits the range people can show in their emotions based on things like their gimmick and relative acting ability. I was just really moved by it, and it made me a fan of Owen in a way I never was when he was alive and I started watching in late '95. (He was one of the heels I hated most.) I usually cry when watching it -- particularly Austin's beer bash tribute and the way I figure he is telling he forgives Owen for breaking his neck and wishes him luck, and JR and King talking about how they were honored to be part of the night and that you should always tell your family you love them. It was just very well-done and sweet.

Abrupt. Heart wrenching.
You really got the impression that it was not merely a show of respect but that Owen legit meant something to a lot of these people.
And really, I get it. I didn't really care for him at first, but he grew on you like a cyst.
IMO he was better than Bret. Not because he put in the time, he just was.
He was no where near Hitman levels of over at the time of his death, but I had every reason to believe he would've been, had he chosen to continue devoting himself to wrestling.
But yeah, he's done; lost to a stupid, gimmick, no less. It's f***ing stupid.

I think this was the first time I realized how much this business meant to me. I have only cried over a few celebrity deaths. Owen, Dimebag Darrell, and Jim Henson. I cried at Raw is Owen the most. Like, complete waterworks. I couldn't stop it.

Seeing Mark Henry break down like that really hits home. You can sometimes forget that wrestlers are real people, not actors playing a part. However, to see Mark Henry, as large as he was at the time, a man billed as The World's Strongest Man, with all the ridiculous angles he had been in, reading a poem and crying like he was, reminds you, not only that wrestlers are people, with families and friends, but how much they cared about and for each other.

Watched a few times since it's original airing. I can usually get through most of it without breaking up anymore. But then I get to the part at the end of Rock's segment and J.R can't get through what he's saying and you can hear he has force his last few words out, get's me every time

im not trashing taker but i always thought it was shocking that he wasnt there because, as some say, he was staying in character . i wonder if that's true, seems a little extreme if that is true. i wish taker was there that night

Not during Pillman's ten bell salute, Owen or Eddie's tribute or anything else.

I just finished watching in for the first time. And i have to say the segments that hit home and took tears from me were Debra, Dave Hebner, and Jim Ross & King at the end. And after reading Bret Hart's bio, it really makes me wish i got to know Owen alot earlier. I started watching WWE in late 99.

Debra was a wreck too. I haven't watched it since it aired but I remember Jarrett and Road Dogg being a mess too.

Its hard to watch and angering as well. He died in a pointless stunt that would've been forgotten 10 minutes afterwards. It could've easily been avoided and we wouldn't have had that tribute show. It least with Pillman, Guerrero, and Benoit, there was no way of knowing that would happen.

Imagine how Taker felt having to still go out for his match at Over The Edge 99 after knowing that Owen had essentially died in the ring.

I read that too. I need to rewatch the tribute, but I was afraid too because it was and still is, so sad.

Debra saying "I still can't believe your gone and your not with us anymore" was bad enough, but then she followed it up with "I keep looking for you" which was twice as sad.
But the saddest for me, I think is JR. He holds up the whole show until he says "All I can say about Owen Hart is that I hope that I can be as good a man as him, so that I can see him again someday", and that's when he starts to cry...
