Old or current:
If you call AT&T and want anything done, just ask for retention and say you'll cancel, NO ONE on the customer care end gives a **** if you cancel, it does not hurt our numbers at all. It's the retention people who get the blow. The only way you can really hurt a customer care rep would be by rejecting the CPNI, so if you want results quick, just ask for retention
If you game is not sealed from Gamestop, there is a good chance a rep has already played it. Store hours are completely based on performance, and some reps are lucky to get 3 hours every 2 weeks.
Stone mountain is the best job on the planet.

Major financial instituions put the screws to thier workers the same way they do to the general public - worse sometimes.
Taco Bell instructs its employees to give the bare minimum of meet and cheese and to use lettuce as filler in their tacos. The meat scoop holds about two pencil's worth of 'meat.' The chips, cinnamon twists and pico are all made in house oddly enough (as of five years ago).

From my stint working at a dry cleaners: It is not a good idea to try to ride the clothes carousel at a dry cleaners.
From my stint as a newspaper crime reporter: There actually isn't a dark, sinister motive behind what goes into a newspaper story and what doesn't. If a certain individuals side didn't get told, chances are very good that they just refused to comment or were in a position where a comment wasn't possible to get. That happens more often than not.
Also, what we run and where we run it is solely and entirely dependent on what the readers respond to. If you're the type of person who hates how so little news is good news, then get more people to respond to the not-depressing news stories and they'll get more frequent.
And we're not nearly as connected as you think. We don't have a red phone to the governor, and I certainly don't know how to get you in touch with the president. If you call in and ask a question, I may be inclined to try to help you, but I may not be able to do more than a Google search.
Finally, TV news isn't above making a story appear more exciting than it really is. I actually had to put in a good bit of effort to get an interview from someone that a TV station said was "on the run" when they weren't, solely because they couldn't get an interview from them. You're only on the run if there's a warrant out for you, not if you don't go to a listed address in the time that they're sitting out there. Cops were actually called on us during the interview by people who saw the report.

I work for an insurance company that legitimately pays over 90% of its claims. It also works to try and find a way to pay a claim if possible, rather than deny it.

if you ever eat at Outback, the Outback Special is the best steak value...but it is not the best steak we have. I never got why people say that when it's the toughest steak on the menu. Ask your server which steaks are best. We don't recommend the expensive ones because they're expensive...it's because they're the most tender and better quality. That and if you think the bosses go out of their way to make us push the $25 porterhouse, you're crazy. They lose money every time we sell one.

Whenever I'm in the bathroom I've noticed that some of the workers, the ones who work directly with food, don't wash their hands.

I am loving this thread already.
From my time at an indie video game store: We lived and died by bulls*** mark-ups. I believe a Wii Fit was going for $90 somewhere (MSRP, I think), but we sold it for $120 just because. I understand the idea of making a profit, but that seemed excessive and I had a tough time explaining to a customer why our price was $30 above everyone else's.
Also, if you are an indie game store and don't build some semblance of a community, you are just f***ed. The place I worked at is no longer around because they didn't care about having tournaments or any events, which is a completely inept way to handle business. People didn't care about us because a GameStop a few miles away was giving good deals and we had nothing to compete with that. The boss also refused to take out newspaper ads or do anything to generate business. What a mess.
From my time at a magazine for middle-upper/upper class folks: Nothing shocking here, but there are cool rich people and others who live in a world of delusion and self-hype. This magazine was incredibly mismanaged (I am still owed $2,000 I will never see) and none of our subjects or advertisers could see that.
Also, I went through and saw the kind of abuse at my job that I should have sued for. There was sexual harassment (the Publisher implied that he wanted to see a 17-year-old intern naked for a photo shoot, and he also once called someone a faggot, if the story is true -- which it very likely is), racial/ethnic harassment (Pretty sure my boss liked to call Indians "Punjabis" out of spite. He also said we should celebrating the atomic bombings in Japan and didn't like Jews either), and other forms of harassment and badgering (lots of yelling and cursing at employees, plus telling employees that an employee who wasn't there should get over her dying mother and care more about the magazine than her). The place was a hellish scam. Can't believe I stayed on as long as I did; I guess it was some sort of Stockholm Syndrome or something.

I used to work in a Hershey Chocolate Factory...Be aware that with Heath Bars, Pay Day Bars, Milk Dudes, Robin Eggs, and a few other products that there is a GREAT chance that what your eating has either sat around and been reworked months later before being packaged to you or that it has been on the floor and scooped back onto the line

Working at a college I have learned that financial aid is one of the biggest scams in history. I have talked to people that workat the campus store and students buy ps3s and games laptops all with federal money they do not pay back. Yep your tax dollars at work.

Not necessarily true...Most of that money is from the student loans and in the refund checks that are designed in a perfect world to go towards the next semester but kids will take the left over and blow it thus needing more loans...I am 15 thousand dollars down in student loans for a freaking associates degree falling victim to this ploy in college as well

I've never actually worked in the field but I know enough people who have to say this - most people in the medical profession are hardcore drug addicts. Not the doctors so much, but nurses, orderlies, etc., basically the people responsible for your day to day care are ridiculously drugged up most of the time. If you're ever in Oswego, NY and you get sick, refuse all medical attention until you are safely out of city limits.

Electronics salesman that knows very little about electronics. But I seem to be very good at bsing my way through it. I simply listen to what the customer wants and then give it to them. I don't try to upsell by explaining features of other models, and I always make sure to know what we have in stock and where it is. I also try to look super busy all the time so the customers don't bother me as much.

There's a electronic store/pawn shop in Jersey I worked at. The back is so covered with various merchandise, most of it never put to sale, and it's pretty much a hoarder's room.
