In addition to gamestop. It is a very terrible company, poorly ran. The bottom guys GA's who most of you interact with, are forced to sell subscriptions and reserves. Not for a added incentive or anything, but just for hours. A store was given hours based on the numbers they produced. Crappy store, crappy hours. You could have 8 employees on the pay roll and only 80 hours for that week. Some GA's were getting 3 hour work weeks.
The used game policy is poorly inforced and with a little bit of effort, you could easily get about 6 games out of 1 $54.99 purchase.
The game informer discount is actually a good deal if you only shop at gamestop. Gamestop has a heavy hand in game Informers pocket. For proof, check out a some reviews in a current game informer, and then go in the store and see what displays and boards are up.
All the employees are plotting behind each others backs constantly. It's a fight for hours and everyone is out to get everyone, jumping on someone's reserve, leaving the counter when 'broke customers' came in so you got em. Place was a jungle.
No, none of the female game advisors play games.
If a GA seems extra agressive during a sale, its because a email was just sent out saying 'sell this many of this or hours get cut'
Job does has it perks, not paying for games is cool, and most of the customers are ok. Had some cool friends there too.

Restaraunt: All those things you've heard about how cooks and servers putting things in rude customers' food are true. Mostly some sort of bodily fluid. It's not just boogers and spit either.... So please, be polite when dealing with waiters and waitresses. A lot of them have other things on their mind as well and they don't need to deal with douchebags on top of it all. Okay, that is just inexcusable. I have worked in a couple of different food service jobs and have never thought about tainting someone's food, no matter how big of a douchebag they were. Anyway...on to stories of my own: Pizza Hut: The dough comes to the store frozen. The managers are militant about monitoring how much cheese you put on a pizza and refer to the cheese as "gold." The store I worked at violated federal law by not giving employees ANY breaks...no lunches, nothing. Also, I am currently an attorney and have noticed that some clients expect their attorney to hate the opposing counsel or even the judge if they rule against you. This is just ridiculous. You are paying me and I will work as hard as I can to get your desired result, but just because someone that you don't like is paying another attorney does not mean that I am going to be rude to that attorney. Trust me, it's better for everyone involved to have a good, cordial relationship with opposing counsel.

As a deliveryfella for several years, I can tell you for now that pizza delivery time means nothing. It's more of a really rough estimate, one has to realize these things take time. Pizza places are not magic. They do not conjure up your food from nothingness. It needs to cook, and your food is not the only food they are working on. If we're in the middle of a rush and stretched thin, and you call and complain, it's not helping things and likely pissing off your driver and painting his or her perception of you negatively. You don't want that when it comes to someone who is essentially serving your food, as it's been said in here before.
There can and will be two or three orders that the driver may have before yours taking priority due to time, and he or she is getting it to you as quick as they can. So relax, deep breaths, and calm yo tits, your food will be there when it gets there.
Additionally, as with any food service industry worker, be f***ing nice to them. They are basically doing you a favor. Don't you ever talk down to them or treat them like s***, because there are people like me out there who won't stand there and let you do it, and you will see what a dickwad you were being by the time someone like me is done with you. We're all human, we all have bad or off days. A waiter or waitress is not an animal nor are they your slave. If you treat them as such, you deserve whatever they give you back. We remember the jerks. And in pizza delivery, we also know where you bloody live. Literally. It's just not smart.
I could honestly tell you SO much more, but I'll save my breath for now.

I used to work selling overpriced knives. Much to my surprise it is almost as political wrestling. Also my boss tried to convince me to quit college to sell his over-priced stuff. It wouldn't be Cutco knives would it? I've heard horror stories...

On the topic of grossly overused unfunny comments to employees, if you see someone washing windows, mowing the lawn, or performing any sort of similar task at a business, please don't ever tell them, "Once you're done with that, you can come wash the windows/mow the lawn/perform other task at my house."
It's not clever. It's not clever because you're not the first person to say it. You're not even the first person to say it that day. You're not even among the first twenty to say it that day.
Especially if it's a glass door that opens automatically. Just keep walking so that the door will close and the employee can finish washing the damn door and get back to a less annoying part of the job.
(And saying it on the way into the store and then again on the way out makes you one of the worst people in the world.)

From working at a movie theater: I would HIGHLY recommend both not getting the butter topping on the popcorn (because you don't want to know what it looks like when it's not heated up), as well as generally giving the popcorn a once over once you get it. One of my shifts started with a customer noting that his popcorn had glass shards in it. Also projectionists are likely boning managers up there while your movie's on, but I figured everyone knew that already.
Working at Wal-Mart: If you plan on having a future outside of Wal-Mart, DO NOT WORK THERE (at least in the stock area). They smell it on you and treat you like shit, because how dare you have a prosperous future damn it! That being said, if you want to score some smack there's no place better than out by the rear entrance!
Current Job: Any person who has anything to do with online advertising is duuuuuuuuumb. Also AOL is still the only site I know that still outsources their menial labor to India (which I know as if I'm on call I can almost guarantee I'll get a call from someone I can barely understand around 3 AM trying to explain their problem to me).

If your local news station has a wacky weather guy, he is probably like that off camera too. Even at 5 in the morning.

Can someone explain the 'hours' bit with Gamestop? I don't understand it. I'll give an example, My store was a decent store, not the best but we got decent hours, our problem was the amount of employees *manager would not stop hiring cute girls* Say our store was given 75 hours for a decent work week. Manager: *Does not take any time is on salary* Assistant manager: 25-30 hours SGA *me*: 15-30 hours SGA: 15-30 These are the 4 people you will see the most, usually 1 AM and two SGA *Or key holders* even with the bare min hours, the 3 top people have taken 55 of the 75 available hours for the week. We got 6 more GA's and 20 hours between the 6. This leads to a lot of 3 hour shifts, mainly because a SGA has to close with another person.

I work at a Gas Station.....A BP to be precise a few things. ~ Each station is independently owned and operated. This means that EACH store is essentially it's OWN separate entity. THERE IS NO "CORPORATE" NUMBER. ~ If your Card doesn't work at the pump.....We can't fix it. ~ We actually CAN turn on the pumps for cash customers, it' just REALLY bad business to do so. ~ If you're in all the time, and generally nice and have a SPECIFIC thing you get every time, we'll try to have it ready for you when we see you. ~ If we're busy, and you have a moment....ask for fresh coffee. Chances are we've gotten behind and not made a fresh pot. I used to work at a BP and can vouch for this stuff. Also, don't complain to your local gas station attendant about the price of gas. Most of the time gas stations are selling it a minimum profit (like 1-5 cents a gallon) or breaking even to get customers in the store to buy sodas and stuff. The stuff about pre-pay is true too. Too many drive offs have basically put gas stations (again, who make next to nil on gas as it is) off letting people pump the gas first, then pay. I loved that gas station job. It paid for crap, but it was laid back and I could read a ton of books. Plus it was in a college town so the people were cool and I never got held up.

Regarding telesales the majority of companies who hire you tend to use information bought (either illegally or legally, make sure you check what you sign on all contracts!) and then shared as a print out or as an excel spreadsheet write up, so when any customer asks one of us to "remove them from the system" and doesn't understand we hate calling up random numbers as much as they hate receiving random calls it's just easier for us to pretend we are removing them rather than get into the discussion of which phone companies block which telesales companies numbers...
Regarding sound engineering in a live environment, if you're ever in a band don't treat us like shite or we are less driven to haul any of your gear (not something we have to do, something we do out of politeness to assist any of your poor arse roadies), help you with setting up, make sure none of that damned feedback is due to the poor quality of your guitar set up, and it makes us want to do less in making terrible venues sound like they have decent acoustics when we're on the desk. If you've ever been to the former Barfly venues in the UK those are the places we all hate, not designed for decent acoustics, designed to sell overpriced pints to the student populace.
I dunno, I've had terrible managers and awful co-workers before, but the general disrespect some people have for other human beings (we all have off days, but some people seem to live in an angry way all the time) makes work seem like Hell. Oddly enough the cliche terrible jobs (general supermarkets, fast food etc) that I've had all seem alright because I tend to go in thinking I'll be treated like dust, it's the higher scale/higher responsibility ones that make you dissapointed in people a bit more.

-even asking to go on a call center's "Do Not Call List" means f*** all because there's probably 6 or 7 different places calling you for the same thing and the other ones don't care if one of them put you on a "Do Not Call" list. you really are better off just hanging up the phone or, if you have call display, not even answering in the first place.
-Blockbuster Canada was so terrified of losing a customer for any reason that you could get your late fees waived just by saying you wouldn't pay them. this also made things very expensive for them when selling their debt to a collection agency because the debt was almost worthless... at least, until they went out of business and former customers HAD TO deal with the collection agency and had nowhere else to turn. many customers didn't even realize they still owed money until long after the stores had closed.
-while I kept the place clean, my old boss at the restaurant I worked at never cleaned the place at all and was surprised that I did(small, family run place, there was usually only one employee in the store at a time).

I work for an insurance company that legitimately pays over 90% of its claims. It also works to try and find a way to pay a claim if possible, rather than deny it. of course. that's just good business sense. whose going to invest in an insurance agency with a rep for not paying out? it's kinda sad that insurance agencies have been mythologized as this evil thing that takes your money and doesn't actually help you.

If someone at a grocery store tells you there's none in the back there really is none in the back or the product you want is inaccessible due to being on the bottom of a pallet. If you ask them to double check all they will do is go to back and stand there for a few minutes so you think they're looking really hard. I work at a gorcery store too. I make a point of telling this to every customer who even asks. partially because it's true and partially so they stop asking.

So please, be polite when dealing with waiters and waitresses. A lot of them have other things on their mind as well and they don't need to deal with douchebags on top of it all. Fess up pal. Name the restaurant so us law abiding restaurant workers can avoid that place like the plague. I worked at a grocery store when I was younger and it was insane the kind of stuff they tried to get away with. They never wanted to give you a raise. Ever. I worked there for four years and only got raises when minimum wage was raised and when I found out someone newer than me was making a higher hourly wage. For bagging freaking groceries and told the manager it wasn't right. Ah high school. The deli used to keep the cheese for salads in our produce cooler. That cheese was always the cheese that was out of date...by months. Instead of throwing it away, dairy passed it over and yeah... My old produce manager and I snuck over to the bakery one day and pulled out a couple things of flan. He told me to observe, pulled the date sticker off and there was an expired date sticker under it. We ratted those bastards out quick. No need to be getting customers sick on that. I observed a deli worker opening a serving tray of pasta only to find a dead cockroach on top. They removed it and served it anyways. The same store had a sewage back up out back and didn't care that we had to wade through it to take garbage out. After a week I had enough and walked across the plaza to the Key Deer refuge. Funny how fast s*** gets done when you tell the refuge that an endangered species is eating produce that's fallen out of a dumpster into sewage. One day it was cleaned up. Let's just say I don't shop at that store unless I really, REALLY, have to. Nothing like a little cockroach with my Pasta

I'm a scaffolder working at Suncor, the oldest oil sands plant in the World.
-Coke dust is the black left over dust in getting oil sands (I think I really have to look more into it). Anyway, it's dangerous to your health and you need a mask
-Walking on pipes is generally frowned upon, but sometimes unavoidable. Some pipes are incredibly hot though and can melt your boots to the pipe like what happened with me the other day. It wasn't so bad, just a little sticky.
-Harnesses are generally safe and keep people from falling. Wrestling forums may feel after the Owen Hart deal that they can all be faulty. It makes walking on 2 inch thick tubes of many lengths a little easier knowing you're not gonna die if you fall with 100 feet below you.
-There aren't many shocking things, but the most are the three hydrogen flare stacks. If they shut down, hydrogen could build up and not only would Suncor be blown sky high, but so would Fort McMurray, a 20 minute ride down the road. There are also blast shelters on the site.
There are other hazards, like parts bursting into flames, H2S gas killing out or at least knocking you senseless, and falling objects from other trades but those things don't happen often.

I work in a local Roads office (Engineering), we get people calling in about potholes/road is rough/plow my road/I PAY TAXES DAMMIT crap like that all the time. No matter how big of a jerk you are, you will get you service. Because that's just how we roll.
HOWEVER, if you want to be that tool that goes over our head and calls the superiors/governors office to complain... here's a hint. Instead of your issue being fixed within 1-2 days, we'll get a call 3 weeks later telling us "some idiot is bitching about X, can you fix that?" . So go ahead, keep going over our heads, we love it! Because we don't have to put up with your attitude AND we know you basically get hosed on your service. it's WIN WIN for us.
And for the record, it costs about 257$ an hour to run a Motorgrader. So driving 35 miles (at 20mph) out to your house "just to touch up the road for my son's graduation" really is a kick in the balls to every taxpayer. There's a reason we tell you NO. And it's not because we are mean. It's because we are responsible.
