My favorite thing about Batman Begins was that it was the first Batman movie that was actually about Batman! The Burton/Schumacher series seemed like they were always about whoever the villain(s) were.
I love almost everything about Batman Begins, with the exception of Katie Holmes. I have nothing against her, but with Caine, Oldman, Bale, Freeman and so many others around, the poor girl was clearly out of her element.

I mean of the movie was called Scarecrow it would have merit in my book, but it's not.

I think it is worth noting that Batman Begins in the first modern film we've watched and discussed. The "I won't kill you but I don't have to save you" line was especially awkward. See I think it's perfect for the situation because his one rule is that he never kills anyone, but that doesn't mean he has to save a person.

Batman Begins, one of the few DVDs that managed to escape the Great DVD Purge of 2011.
I remember being so excited for this movie, when it came out. Batman and Robin hurt my soul, and this movie to me really made up for that abomination.
I was so happy to finally see a Batman movie that was gritty, and rooted in some sort of realism.

Modern as in time of production or time when the movie was set? Because we also had "Zodiac". When the movie was set. I'd consider anything from W.W.II onward as modern and anything from about a decade to the present contemporary, maybe a five year window. Modern and contemporary are two different things. I think pacing and the level of seriousness make this stand out the most from the superhero movies that came before it. One could also argue that it's one of the few superhero movies made with the auteur theory in mind, the first Batman being another.

I like Batman Begins, but it's my least favorite of the trilogy. The Dark Knight is by far my favorite of the 3 movies. I think what puts The Dark Knight Rises ahead of Begins for me is Bane. Also, the action scenes are way superior in DKR. I didn't really enjoy Ra's al Ghul too much as a villain. He was too boring to me. I love Scarecrow though. What Begins has though that I like a lot that the other 2 films didn't was the dark atmosphere of Gotham. That is one thing BB had going for it. Gotham looked unique in BB, imo. TDK and TDKR made it look like any generic major metropolis with a long history. Thematically it made sense though. Batman Begins - Gotham is a cesspool, in desperate need of a clean-up. Origin of Batman. Dark Knight - Well on its way towards being cleaned up, though guys like Scarecrow are still running around, when the Joker comes in to challenge the status quo. Batman and what he stands for is challenged. Rises - Bright and shiny. Batman is retired due to a lack of real need. It seems like the shining city on a hill, just waiting for Bane to come wreck things. Return of Batman. Though I do agree they could have done a little more to make it not obvious that it was Chicago, or other cities. They didn't even bother changing street names.

Another thing that makes this movie so great is that there are several talented actors who played small roles: Mark Boone Junior as Gordon's corrupt partner Detective Arnold Flass; Larry Holden as district attorney Carl Finch; Colin McFarlane as Police commissioner Gillian B. Loeb; Linus Roache and Sara Stewart as Thomas and Martha Wayne, Bruce's parents; Richard Brake as Joe Chill, the Waynes' killer; Gerard Murphy as the corrupt High Court Judge Faden; Tim Booth as Victor Zsasz; Rade Šerbedžija as a homeless man, who is the last person to meet Bruce when he leaves Gotham, and the first civilian to see Batman, and Andrew Pleavin as a uniformed policeman. Actors John Foo, Joey Ansah, Spencer Wilding, Dave Legeno, Khan Bonfils, Rodney Ryan, Dean Alexandrou, James Embree, Emil Martirossian, Mark Strange, Justin Miu and Chuen Tsou appear as members of the League of Shadows.

Another thing that makes Batman Begins unique to me is that I consider it to be is the first movie in what I consider to be a good movie trilogy since Star Wars was released way back in 1977.

I'm not a huge fan but Batman Begins does an excellent job of stripping down what works with Batman i.e. the grittiness, the self-exploration, the moral ambiguity at play, and presenting it in a mature way. It's not a particularly thrilling movie but, considering what passed for a Batman film in the past, it was a much needed shift into a realistic direction. It wasn't Nolan's best work but it was a needed step and, with the rest of the trilogy, you can see how well this film sets up the story. very good post, I completely agree. BB was NECESSARY for the whole trilogy, the quality of the movie itself wasn't all that, but TDK and TDKR were the best action/superhero movies ever, and they needed the buildup from BB

I think does a fantastic job of setting up the trilogy showing the journey Bruce Wayne took to become Batman. It was a necessary to completely tell the story. At the same time it is on my Mt. Rushmore of superhero movies along with Nolan's other Batman films and this years Avengers film, but it's my least favorite of the four fantastic films.

Batman Begins is my second favorite of the trilogy after The Dark Knight. I enjoyed seeing his origin, especially the League of Shadows part. The tumbler chase scene was great and I loved the part where the bats flew in distracting the cops. Batman's voice was also better in this film than the next two. The only problems I had were the Batman/Ra's fight scene was bad and the "I won't kill you but I don't have to save you" line.
