As someone who adopted an abused cat 4 years ago, this is an amazing story.

When I was younger, I had a dog that we got as a puppy. He was mildly retarded and had epilepsy, but he was a happy, healthy dog until the day he died.
We then found a kitten. Her mother was dead, and the rest of the kittens were being hunted by something (we assume).... the poor thing didn't know how to run, so she hopped. didn't know how to groom herself, and didn't even know how to meow. We named her Dustbunny.
So, we brought her home. We had another cat, whose previous owner would squeeze her hips until she yelped, whenever she made him mad... which was quite often. It ended up screwing up her hips to the point where we barely saw her during the winter, unless she was sitting next to a heater or under a bunch of covers because the cold made her hurt so much. Her name was Evie.
Evie took Dustbunny under her wing, taught her how to groom herself (proved to be difficult though. Dustbunny is a long-haired cat whereas Evie is short-haired.. different techniques, so we had to keep Dustbunny brushed quite often to avoid tangles)... basically, they've grown up together. They now live at my parents house. Every time I call, I usually get another story about things they've done. They both have a spoiled-rotten life now.
Our current cat, Fluffy, was a stray. She was already fixed, so we assume either her previous owners moved away and left her. Or they got another animal (she seems to take dogs in stride, so we assume it was another cat)... and she said, "Screw this!" and left. She spent a few nights just stopping by my fiancee's grandparents house, and since her aunt was taking care of them in their later years... Fluffy became her buddy. Eventually, Fluffy would come in the house and spend the night. Over time, she stopped wanting to go explore outside and just wanted to hang out at the house.
Once my fiancee's grandparents both passed on, it was time for her aunt to head back to New Jersey. Well, she already had a cat back home that wouldn't take kindly to a new cat, and based on one of our theories.. we figured Fluffy wouldn't take kindly to her either. Well, her aunt had grown attached to Fluffy, and was really agonizing over what to do. One day, while visiting, she crawled up into my lap and stayed there for almost 2 hours... but what really sealed the deal was her crawling over to my son's lap (who was 3 at the time) and laying down. Her aunt immediately decided we would be a good home for Fluffy, and she's been with us ever since.
In fact, she's currently freaking out behind me right now, playing with newspaper.
I know none of you care about that stuff.... but, stories like this just make me want to talk about my pets. Both past and present. There's nothing special about them, just like how there's nothing special about kids. To everyone else, they're just there.. but to you, they can be your world... or at least a huge part of your family. And while I can understand people who just don't like, or want the responsibility of, pets... to each their own. I just can't understand how people can get a pet and treat them like shit.
Meh... I'm rambling now.

If it makes you feel even better, this story plays out dozens or more times a year, every year, all over the world. There are plenty of people who show altruism, many more than we will ever know. You cannot hold mankind accountable for the bad without remembering the good.
