The Sid/Bret cage match and the promo afterwards is what started the Attitude era, imo.

The Sid/Bret cage match and the promo afterwards is what started the Attitude era, imo. I agree with this but it's what happened the week before that led to the go ahead for this angle. Vince expected big ratings for the Owen v Bulldog Euro title tournament following weeks of build up and a near classic match. When Vince saw the TV rating had actually fallen from 2.5 the previous week, to a 1.9 he allegedly called a meeting of bookers and senior superstars and declared that the old formula of building long feuds and storylines, culminating in a big singles match was no longer drawing and they needed to 'borrow' certain elements from the more hip and edgy ECW. As Bret only turned on his fans in America it was the first time WWF essentially gave me permission to cheer a heel which was a revolutionary concept at the time (and in many ways it still is). I may have cheered heels before but there was usually a slight sense of guilt about it as a kid.
I think seeing how the reactions differed between different sets of fans played an important part in pathing the way for the attitude era even if he didn't directly start it.
You could even argue it was a precursor to Cena's mixed reactions.

Saying WCW had nothing to do with the attitude era because it once produced matches at Disney is like saying WWF/E had nothing to do with it because Hulk Hogan told kids to take their vitamins. Nobody told you that WCW only produced shows from Disney for a certain period of time? SMFH That's your opinion. personally I just didn't find WCW all that edgy. There was a time when I was a kid that the magazines made WCW look real to me (mainly because of Cactus Jack)But by the time we got WCW here which was after Hogan went hell. They just never seemed all that edgy to me. |

They made it look like WWF was invading WCW and trashing the sets. |

I can't imagine anyone watching during that time period sharing your opinion, and certainly not when the main competition (WWF) was throwing out Salvatore Sincere and TL Hopper around the same time. |

BTW, the Attitude Era officially started at Wrestlemania XIV when Austin won the WWF championship. Everything before that was leading up to it. I'll call 1996 to Wrestlemania XIV the pre-Attitude Era. |
