I've had two dogs, but got them late in their life, this will the first time I've had animals living by myself.
Any owners here who could give me pros and cons of both species?

Cats are easy pets to take care off, not very playful though. But they can be, do there own thing and you only need to feed them.
Dogs, though want and need attention. They are really playful and fun to take for walks and things like that.
I always preferred Dogs over Cats, but it's your decision in the end.

Get a dog if you want a pet, get a cat if you want an animal that might ocassionally visit you.

Every girl I know that meets a guy with a cat always makes fun of them behind their backs, then when I show them a picture of my dog they get all giddy with excitement and want to come play with her. Dogs are social animals and so are their owners while cats are for people that are socially awkward. Never in the history of hooking up has a girl boned a dude because he has a cat. I've seen girls swoon over a guy because they have an awesome dog.
Those are just some of the reasons why dogs are exponentially better than cats.

I used to be a dog person when I was a kid but now I like cats. They're pretty self-sufficient and can be playful and affectionate when treated right. The only thing I really have against dogs is that some of them can get too rambunctious for my liking, especially big dogs.

I'm a cat person myself. I have 3. I don't mind dogs, but I wouldn't want to own one. I can't stand the smell and they leave hair everywhere. plus it's a bigger time investment. cats are also easier to cuddle with by and large.

As someone who's lived with two cats and five dogs in my life, here's my two cents...
Dogs are really man's best friend. They're loyal. They're playful. They're almost always cheerful, and can brighten an otherwise shitty day. They're loving. They're supportive. I've heard many stories about how dogs can sense when their owners are having a bad time, and will do whatever they can to make you feel better. They're protective. When you owned your dogs, have you ever noticed how they're always barking whenever you got to your front door? Dogs can add an element of security to your home. They're practical. Because you have to be active to an extent in order to properly take of your dog, it helps you lead a more healthy lifestyle. Some people like owning a dog because they have to physically get up and walk it. Also, you can teach your dog tricks a lot easier than you can a cat.
Of course, dogs are also the neediest animals I've ever seen. They always have to be around you, and believe me, that can get very annoying. I once had a shih tzu who could never stand when I wasn't paying attention to him. When I was on the computer, not paying attention to him? He'd bark. Loudly. And that got old really fast. Dogs beg at the dinner table. Dogs can be hyper. I once lived with a dog named "Rascal" because he'd always be getting into the garbage making a mess, or knocking stuff over. And when you're taking them on a walk, it was aggravating to have to keep your dog on a tight leash just to make sure he/she doesn't end up getting into a fight with another one. I can remember a time where I was taking two dogs out for a walk and the second I turned my back, they were going at it with the next door neighbor's dog. Dogs are fun, but they require a lot of attention and time.
Cats are independent by nature. They don't require the amount of time and attention invested in them that dogs do. The only things you really have (as in, it's mandatory) to do is feed them and clean their litterbox, both of which are easier than the maintenance dogs can require. Cats eat less, and they annoy you less. Obviously cats are useful in getting rid of small rodents, but I've also found that they're good for getting those irritating small insects that get into your house somehow. When I owned my first cat, she often cleared out whatever wasps, spiders, cockroaches, and crickets that managed to get in. Months after she left, I found the basement crawling with them. And because they're independent, they can entertain themselves, so they don't crowd you all the time. And don't let dogs lovers convince you otherwise, cats are perfectly capable of being playful.
Of course, cats could never offer the kind of companionship that a dog can. I have no doubt that they're capable of loving. Dog lovers will say otherwise, but there are plenty of stories to back that up, but it's true they're nowhere near as outwardly affectionate. Cats are also pretty selfish, self-motivated, picky, and cleanly animals. You have to clean that litterbox out all the time, because if it's dirty they'll use your floor as their toilet instead. They don't offer the security that dogs can. They don't offer the practicality that dogs can.
In the end, neither pet is inherently better than the other, and I think it matters more what kind of person you are. I think the more extroverted, outgoing types would prefer a dog while the more introverted types connect more with cats, which is probably the biggest reason why I prefer them.

As someone who has had both at some point, it breaks down like this:
If you're living on your own, and you don't really have anyone to care for the animal for an extended period of time while you're away, cats are easier to handle in that regard, since they're self-sufficient...just as long as you have food, water, and a litter box at their convenience.
However, if you know you'll have a decent amount of time set for the animal, you can't go wrong with a dog. Yes, they require walks and lots of attention, but they're wonderful companions, and they won't let you down.
If I had to choose, personally, I'd go with a dog, but go with a pet that works best with your schedule.

How easy or difficult is the startupfase with dogs? Because that's the biggest thing standing in the way of my choice being a dog. They also seem better to bring caravan camping which I do every summer.
Then I also want a cat that can sleep on my stomach for hours, only thing standing in the way of them being my choice i ending up with a totally distant one.
What gender is best in both?
An eventual dog will definately be named Bimbo (sounds better in norwegian).

Assuming that by "startupfase", you're talking about how easy it is to train them to behave or housebreak them, it'll depend on the dog and how well you teach it. Some learn faster than others, but I don't believe it takes that long in most cases. Also - you could go down to the shelter and find a dog that's already been trained, so you can skip that part altogether. What gender is best in both? I don't think it matters with either species. The two cats I've owned were both male and female, and they acted pretty much the same way. Ditto a male and female dog I used to live with. I've read that male dogs are the more hyper/playful of the two, but I don't know how true that is.

The majority of my friends are women and I'd estimate that 97% of them are dog people. I can't even try to fathom how many times a friend of mine has went on a date with a guy or was talking to some dude at a bar then lost interest because the guy had a pet cat. There is just something strange about a guy that owns a cat and is balls deep in love with it. "Want to see a picture of my cat?" is pretty much an instant dealbreaker for most chicks I know.

An eventual dog will definately be named Bimbo (sounds better in norwegian). The start up costs for a dog is pretty cheap because you don't need a litter box and cat litter. All you need are a water bowl, food bowl, collar leash, and shots at the vet. Sounds like a cute lapdog would be perfect if you want something to sleep on your chest and I've preferred females to male dogs because they seem more mellow to me.
