Both make fine pets. You must not know many girls or live in a prejudice town because all that stuff you say about girls not liking men who have a pet cat is BS. The majority of my friends are women and I'd estimate that 97% of them are dog people. I can't even try to fathom how many times a friend of mine has went on a date with a guy or was talking to some dude at a bar then lost interest because the guy had a pet cat. There is just something strange about a guy that owns a cat and is balls deep in love with it. "Want to see a picture of my cat?" is pretty much an instant dealbreaker for most chicks I know. I would venture that the idea of being "balls deep in love" with any animal would be something of a turn off for most women. Then some girls are into that, but those girls generally have deep psychological issues that they're currently talking to their therapist about.

How easy or difficult is the startupfase with dogs? Because that's the biggest thing standing in the way of my choice being a dog. They also seem better to bring caravan camping which I do every summer. Then I also want a cat that can sleep on my stomach for hours, only thing standing in the way of them being my choice i ending up with a totally distant one. What gender is best in both? An eventual dog will definately be named Bimbo (sounds better in norwegian). The start up costs for a dog is pretty cheap because you don't need a litter box and cat litter. All you need are a water bowl, food bowl, collar leash, and shots at the vet. Sounds like a cute lapdog would be perfect if you want something to sleep on your chest and I've preferred females to male dogs because they seem more mellow to me. If you're gong to get one of those tiny-ass rat-dogs you may as well just get a cat. At least you won't have to worry about it constantly barking in that sharp-pitch yapping noise everytime it sees another living creature walking around outside.

I'm a woman, and I'm a cat person. It is absolutely not a turn-off; in fact, it's quite the opposite. I respect dog people, I love dogs (though I'm allergic), but a guy who appreciates cats is that much more sexy.

You mentioned caravan camping, so I'll to give my thoughts at that.
I think cats, being highly independent, would be easier during the travel phase. Dogs you'd need to make fairly frequent stops to let them stretch out and do their business. Cats would probably just be fine parking their rear and sleeping for 12 hours.
But I'd imagine that cats, being roamers, are more likely to disappear during the camping and not return until they're good and ready, which could make camping a little more stressful. That's not to say dogs don't run off, but it's a little easier to prevent with leashes and such.
In general, though, just find a pet that fits your personality. Not all dogs act the same way, nor do all cats. It's more important to have one that works with your personality than anything else.

I like both but I prefer cats. I've always had a cat at some point in my life.

No offense but your girl-friends sound shallow as hell. Of all the reasons to dismiss a guy, "cat owner" has got to be right up there with the dumbest.

I figure they'd appreciate a guy that knows how to take care of a pussy. I'll show myself out now.

I've had two dogs, but got them late in their life, this will the first time I've had animals living by myself. Any owners here who could give me pros and cons of both species? Pros of the Cat: You can leave them alone at home for a week as long as you have a long term feeder/waterer or have a friend who will feed/water them. They can be surprisingly affectionate and playful, as long as they've been raised right. The litter box, which is a pro and a con. On one hand you don't have to take a cat for a walk and pick up its crap, but on the other hand you have to clean the box. Cons of the Cat: If they urinate in your house man it's a bitch to get that smell out. While they are affectionate, it's not the affection of a dog. Pros of the Dog: Probably the best pet in the world that humans feel the closest bond to. I cried for days and felt like crap for a week when I put my dog down, though I almost did the same for my cat. That being said for whatever reason the connection with a dog is hard to beat. Loyalty. Sort of related to the first point, but there is nothing like the loyalty of a good dog. Protection. Granted not the breed I will only ever own (the whippet), but they will at least usually be an effective watchdog to alert you if strangers are in the house. Forced exercise. I'm damn near tempted to get a dog just to take it for walks every day. Cons of the Dog: You can't really leave them alone. It's torture for the poor dog in most cases, unless maybe you have two of them. You need space. A cat you can keep in an apartment and it will do fine. A dog you can in theory, but I won't own one unless I have a yard they can access and play in. More liability. Not that it's a huge worry, but dogs are more likely to injure another person than a cat. Again depends on the breed. I have two cats now and for my living situation it is perfect. That being said when I ever get a house with a real yard I'll have a couple whippets in it.

I get a break on my insurance simply for owning a dog, there is no discount on house insurance for possessing a cat that I am aware of.

I prefer dogs, but it really depends on your living situation and schedule. A cat is much better suited for someone who lives in a smaller apartment who works a lot. But if you like to go camping and want to bring the little guy along, a dog is much better suited for that. That said, cats can pretty much take care of themselves for a weekend while dogs would need a neighbor, friend, family member, etc. to come by, feed, and walk them.
Another thing is that cats do have very sharp claws (especially kittens, they're practically little knives) and can be very scratchy. And declawing them is considered cruel nowadays. So make sure you have a scratching post of sorts if you get a cat.
And be sure to spay/neuter whatever you get.

it really comes down to your finances and amount of free time. Cats are cheaper to take care of and don't require as much of your time. This is coming from a person who doesn't really like dogs though. The things I like about cats are usually the same things dog lovers hate about them.
