I've heard this thrown around but I am not 100% sure this is true.
Did WCW get tired of paying Marvel for the rights and trademarks of "Hulk" "Hulk-A-Mania" and so on?
So that's why when the turned him heel for a good 3 years, it saved WCW some coin?

Yes, Hogan said so on Leno.
During a '98 interview (I believe it was right around Thanksgiving) someone yelled "GO HULK!" and he, faux-panicing replied "Don't say Hulk because everytime we do, we have to pay Marvel Comics. It's Hollywood."
Of course, he could have been joking/Hogan-exaggerating.

It's not true to say that they turned Hogan heel in order to refer to him as Hollywood Hogan. They made the plan to make him heel and decided that this would be a good opportunity to drop the 'Hulk' from the name. He had already been nicknamed 'Hollywood' by some within the wrestling industry going back to the '80s. This was the perfect time to drop the 'Hulk.'
It is true that the issues with Marvel helped lead WCW to go ahead and change the branding after Hogan turned heel. But again, they didn't turn him heel simply to change his name.

It's WCW. They'd have paid Marvel 4X what they would have asked for even if he didn't need ever use the name. Hell, the secretary at Marvel who initially made the phone call likely got handed a 4 year guaranteed $3,000,000 contract by Bischoff in the confusion.
WWE did drop 'Hulk' entirely from their TV shows/websites for a while. Seeing and hearing him referred to as 'Hollywood Hogan' while in Real American red and yellow was bizarre.
i think Hogan himself now owns his own name and the moniker 'Hulkamania' and variations therein.

Yeah, he trademarked "Hulk Hogan" since the character is it's own than when he was Terry "Hulk" Boulder who wanted to be similar to Lou Ferrigno and the Incredible Hulk TV series. I think they even wanted to paint him green.

It just so happens that Turner Broadcasting and Time Warner (DC Comics is a property of Time Warner) merged just a few months before Hogan turned heel. Seeing that DC is Marvel's main competition, I can see them charging WCW more money over the name Hulk.

lol ANY time i can bring up Linda I do. She calls herself "Linda Hogan". The Hogan name, is a fictional character.
It's like Kirsten Dunst calling herself "Kirsten Spider-Man".

Yeah, there was a 6 month period a few years ago where Marvel, Hulk and WWE couldn't hammer out a deal on the "Hulk" name so he was only referred to as Hollywood Hogan. It was weird

Just think: If Terry Bollea had not bought the rights to his ring name, today it would be owned by ... a mouse?! Yep, because The Walt Disney Company bought Marvel a few years ago.

Didn't he end up signing some deal with Marvel which basically clarified things between them and gave him the rights to the name? I seem to recall reading something like that on a comics news site many years ago.

WWF also had to give White Wolf Games credit for Gangrel all the time when he was around because Gangrel was the name of a clan in Vampire: the Masquerade.

Bad News Brown should have gotten royalties for creating the Hollywood Hogan name, he called Hogan that in 89 or so.

I'm pretty sure they hit a bit of a legal snag in early 1990 as well and that's what The Ultimate Warrior always referred to him as "Hoek Hogan"
