I recently got a bunch of the TPBs (for free!) at a flea market, but is the series any good?

I haven't read it in quite some time, but yeah, it's really good from the beginning, to about the part where Robert Kirkman takes over, but even that run has it's bright spots.

I think it depends on what you want out of an X-Men series. The problem I had with it (and all of the Ultimate stuff in general) is that they made characters very unlikeable. Ultimate Xavier and Ultimate Wolverine for example are two of the biggest scumbags you'll ever come across.

Yeah outside of Ultimate Spider-Man the only thing in it I enjoyed was Ultimate Fantastic Four, but even still that ended really stupidly.

It has its moments just avoid Ultimate Requiem which is basically their way of re starting everything over

Personally, I like the Ultimate Universe better than 616. From the inception with Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate Team-Up and Ultimate X-Men, to Ultimates 1 and 2, Ultimate FF, and even the crossovers (Ultimates/Ult X-Men WAR, Ultimate X4, and Ultimate Power) were really good.
Not surprisingly, though, Ultimates 3, New Ultimates, and Ultimatum (all written by Jeph Loeb) were the only straight up BAD stories told.
Give it a shot, the Millar writing of the first few arcs along with them Kubert boys' art makes for some awesome reads.
But if you can get a hole of issues 13 and 14, Chuck Austen's Ultimate Gambit intro, you will not be sorry. Two of my favorite comic issues ever.

Yes
I thought it was awesome. There's a few dull arcs, like the Magician arc and the final arc was a bit boring but overall it's a great series.

Don't read Ultimatum. Just stop and go about your life.
