The krogan can live even longer. But often don't, because of their love of war. And even before "proper" weaponry was introduced to their civilization, they still died a lot by being eaten by predators. Keep in mind we don't see many Asari Matriarchs either, and judging by how frail they are and how constantly they fight with each other, maybe that isn't a big shock. There's nothing that's exactly unbelievable about someone dying before hitting their maximum lifespan when it's that long. But the krogan who get killed often do through bizarre accidents (eaten by a thresher maw, suffocated by poison gas, fell off a cliff). Which when you can live for over a whole millenium, freak accidents have a much greater probability to happen over the course of your life. I dig the Batarians because we never see what their home world is actually like, only hear that they're insular and keep slaves. And the only people who don't live on Khar'shan and its immediate colonies are the reprobates.

Remember, I defended the hell out of the Batarians in the official Mass Effect 3 thread(the one where we had that amazing discourse about the Quarian/Geth war), simply because all we had to base the race/civilization on was its slave trades, marauders, pirates, bandits, mercenaries, terrorists, and just generally not nice people. And of course we can't forget how humans just waltz on in and flat out stole Batarian colonies and claimed them to be our own.

They were unclaimed planets in a region of space that the Batarians unofficially claimed. The humans got there first, the Batarians got pissed, the Council went 'uh-nuh you should have claimed them', the Batarians got more pissed and withdrew their embassy from the citadel. The council then hinted that it was humanities problem now.
