The anime starts to pick up and becomes good once it reaches Yugi and Kaiba's 2nd duel at the entrance of Pegasus' castle. It becomes increasingly better with the Battle City arc w/Marik, and the final Dawn of the Duel/Millennium World arc with the finale. All of the filler stuff inbetween, like Virtual World/Noah's Arc, Waking the Dragons/Orichalcos, and Grand Championship/KC Grand Prix, are not that strong, although I guess you can say the Orichalcos stuff is the best of the three. Overall, it's still a strong and solid anime when you focus on the main arcs, with Battle City being my favorite.
As for the TCG, it was fun as hell for the first 5 or so years it was out when you were able to ACTUALLY find people to play with. I still have a small interest in it, but considering it's tough to find anyone who plays it anymore, I just stick to deck building just...for the sake of building a cool, themed deck. Although while I haven't bought any new cards in years, I still have a shitload of them left to work with, and I do most of my "building" online just saving cards into folders and stuff like that. I try to stay far away from the Tuner/Synchro/XYZ stuff as I possibly can.

only version of the show I like is the abridged series. Honestly, as much as I like the main anime, I love the abridged series even more.

The card game had a good premise, but they did a terrible job in balancing it for a long time. The anime has always been insanely goofy, bu in an alright way. It's funny how seriously they try to make a card game.

I just find it odd that sometimes, one flippin' card game battle takes up like 5-10 episode to reach its finish. Talk about some serious decompression.

I watched the anime before getting into the cards, so imagine my disappointment when I found out that a lot of the cards couldn't actually do most of the awesome things that the anime said they could do.

Never got into the cards, but the anime is fun in a campy way, and probably one of 4Kids's less cringe-worthy dubs (that's not saying much, but it's something). The Orichalcos arc is far and away the best one.

Too bad they never showed the real first season, where the card game wasn't even in it yet.

Too bad they never showed the real first season, where the card game wasn't even in it yet. I wouldn't call that a "real first season" as much as a "different series althogether". I mean, screw the rules, Kaiba has GREEN HAIR~! It was done by a different studio and it was more based on the original manga and the focus was on the "games" in which Yugi would be "King" of. In fact, the titles are different in the Japanese versions. The ones we know as "Yu-Gi-Oh!" (original, GX, 5Ds and ZeXal) are "Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters", whereas the first one produced was just "Yu-Gi-Oh!". Oh and I love the anime. And the card game. And the abridged series. And some characters from GX (ALL HAIL DA CHAZZ~!). And 5Ds. Still haven't laid eyes on ZeXal though.

Yeah, Season Zero, as most people like to refer it as, is a far cry from what we got in America. A Shadow Game (or Death Game/Game of Darkness/Dark Game), was an impromptu "game" involving random or sometimes simple scenarios that would effect your life if you lost. Losers received punishment in the form of "Penalty Games" that ranged from horrific illusions, to permanent physical damage, to actual death, all that reflected the crime the loser committed. And Yami Yugi was pretty different from his main series counterpart. His demeanor was more "crazy", and he was much less forgiving to his victims, but his actions were still righteous.
I too wish it was it could be adapted in English for the States, but then again, I guess it's better if it stays completely unedited, as it could "trim" some of the dark subject matter.

Dueling Network is a good site if anyone needs someone to play the card game with. I have an account there, and I'm always willing to play when I can.

Even though it was filler The orichalcos saga aka waking the dragons aka the doma arc is by far my favourite and IMO the best arc in the entire series.
Yugi loses CLEANLY for the first and only time in the entire series sans the final duel. Introdouces us to my personal favourite duelist in raphael and my favourite card Eatos Gave us IMO joeys best duel of the series with valon. And gave to us the most broken deck in the entire series with Dartz orichalcos deck. And brought back weevil and rex.
There was just so much greatness in what was a filler arc.

Zexal is a cheap Megaman plot 5D is a big WTF to me .

I did not like the Orichalcos season. Yu-Gi-Oh, in large part, tells the story of Yami Yugi trying to get back his memories, with Seasons 1, 2, 3, & 5 all playing into that in their own way. Season 4 just doesn't fit in with anything else and, really, is a giant waste of time. I can deal with the other filler arcs (the video game, Virtual World, Grand Prix, etc.) because they're not an entire season - and I even enjoyed the Grand Prix, it was cool to see the main characters playing in a regular tournament for once - but Orichalos just annoyed me to no end.
As far as any of the sequels - I made it a few episodes through GX before deciding that I was never going to like it. I prefer to not concern myself with the others.
The first Yu-Gi-Oh season, "Season 0", was pretty cool. I'd love to see how it would have looked had that been the series that adapted the entire manga.
