The thing is, Jerry is SUPPOSED to be the face, even in newer episodes. It's like the makers of the show didn't know its audience at all.

Jerry was supposed to be a heel but MGM were never sure how to book him.

They always try to make the mice cute and innocent. Well, as Tom himself says:

Agreed. Isn't there at least one or two episodes where Tom comes out the victor? I really liked those episodes.

Jerry is the face that no one likes, and is shoved down fan's throats, despite the calling for a Tom turn to finally give people a realistic reason to cheer him.

Depends on the context of the storyline. If it's Tom trying to rid the house of Jerry at the orders of the owner, for example, I can understand the cat getting all the sympy. If it's Tom trying to eat Jerry for whatever reason otherwise, then dammit the mouse has a right to defend itself.

Listen. They both need each other. It's called 'inter-dependency.' And they both know it. Yeah, I know. He does terrible things to Tom. Nasty, even sadistic things. But that's fine, as long as that's what Tom wants. Think about it. His actions. He's always asking for it. It's his partners job, to fulfill that need. And Jerry knows that. Proof? Well, in the "Tom and Jerry Show" they live with each other..."
(Agent Francis York Morgan, Deadly Premonition) fantastic game!!

Jerry's a heel, but his uncle Pecos is worse. Poor Tom; just minding his own business then this mouse just starts ripping out his whiskers!
