Been watching a lot of old Attitude era clips, and I must say, Lawler was an awesome commentator when he was a heel. I legit found him very funny and thought his reactions really added to the match.
Also, I think many people can agree that Lawler's commentary is pretty dreadful these days and that his attitude era stint was much better. Is it because he has lacked motivation or because he is now a face?

It's because he doesn't even bother trying to play off of Michael Cole at all. Other commentators like JR or Mathews can work with Cole and it makes the commentary a lot better. King just snipes and disagrees with everything Cole says, damn near.
Like the Cena-Swagger beat down. Cole is trying to put over how Cena is snapping and how uncharacteristic it is and that Swagger doesn't deserve it, while King is saying that he's okay with Cena trying to kill Swagger. I thought that hurt the segment quite a bit and completely missed the point of the segment. I mean, Swagger is face-down on the steps with Cena looking like he's going to curbstomp him, and King says that Swagger brought it on himself.

Lawler is the worst commentator ever. He sounds like he doesn't want to be there, he's NOT funny and he makes me want to watch RAW in Spanish. Words cannot express the extent of my loathing for Jerry ''The King'' Lawler. They should make Cole commentate all WWE shows and PPVs.

Get rid of him already!

Even though Lawler's attitude era heel commentator persona was just Bobby Heenan-lite, it was still enjoyable.
I think the reason Lawler's so terrible these days is because he just doesn't care. He's said as such.

I don't know i just found The King annoying back in the Attutide Era never understood the big deal about his commentary back then.
He's even worse as a face commentator these days though no question and he still holds the creepy old man stuff during Divas Matches.

Never been a fan of Lawler's commentary, always found him annoying and unfunny. He was bearable in the Attitude days, but only because he had JR to work off, and the two of them had definite chemistry.
It baffles me why they push Cole/Lawler as the main announce team when they've been so awful for so long now, and they have so many better options on hand. Josh Matthews, Striker, Stanford, even Regal, any combination of those guys would be better than Cole/Lawler.

I thought Lawler's best work as a commentator was back in the New Generation, actually, when he was working opposite Vince. Vince had a certain helpless, deer-in-the-headlights quality as a babyface commentator where Lawler was really able to get under his skin, whereas JR always seemed comparatively unflappable. (But unlike Cole these days, Lawler still let Vince do plenty of talking and get his points in before viciously mocking them, instead of just shouting him down constantly.)
He was great back in the day; it was similar to Heenan's routine, but more mean-spirited. Especially against Bret Hart and his family. Even in segments that had nothing to do with Bret or any of the Harts, Lawler'd never pass up a chance to insult them. Which was always hilarious.

I never liked his commentary, even as a heel.
