Bingo! I always looked upon "hoss" as a big guy who can handle his business and might crack the upper card...someday.

I would say Nash, debuted as a bodyguard like most hosses, didn't do much in the ring, he was the original hoss.

Nowadays, calling someone a hoss is like calling a wrestler a vanilla midget.

Ill go for Bigelow just over Vader. Just because I was a mark for Bigelow when I was a kid, thought the guy had such a cool look and the top rope headbutt he used was awesome.

Can't believe it's page three already and no one has mention Batista. It's totally Batista.
Then again, if Batista counts, there's no real reason Cena doesn't. And then if Cena counts, there's no reason The Rock, Undertaker, and HHH don't count. Maybe this term should be re-defined in the OP and we can all re-examine with a true poll of people to pick from.

Cena doesn't really count because he's on the smaller side in stature, and isn't presented as a "powerhouse" in the narrative. Despite his almost superhuman strength, Cena doesn't wrestle like a true big man wrestler. He is really strong, but his lack of size keeps him from being booked like a monster. Instead, he's treated like an average wrestler who performs feats of strength powered by the electricity of the moment.. Batista on the other hand, was a 300 plus pounder whose repertoire consisted mostly of mowing people down with power moves.

Would you consider the Road Warriors "hosses?"

I *think* he's bigger now than he used to be (but it's hard to tell because everyone is so "small"), but back in the day when he had the street fight with Eddie, he didn't look that much bigger. Granted Eddie was probably gassed up beyond belief.

That list is pretty inaccurate, for one thing -- "hoss" is a term that's been around for many years, long before Jeff Hostetler was around. For example, "Hoss" Cartwright on the 1950's/60's TV show Bonanza.

Hoss was used to described a man with a large frame who was very strong. It's not a word just exclusive to pro wrestling.

This 100%. The only other reasonable pick would be Vader. Some of the answers here are ridiculous.
