So now that the year is essentially over, I decided to compile all of the matches Dave Meltzer rated this year and arrange them in order from highest rated, starting at **** and up. Here's what I got:
1. The Undertaker vs. Triple H (WrestleMania 28) ****3/4 2. John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar (Extreme Rules) ****1/2 2. CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan (Over The Limit) ****1/2 2. Ryback, Kane, & Daniel Bryan vs. The Shield (TLC) ****1/2 5. CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan (Money In The Bank) ****1/4 5. John Cena vs. CM Punk (Night Of Champions) ****1/4 7. Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan (Extreme Rules) **** 7. World Heavyweight Championship Money In The Bank Ladder Match (Money In The Bank) **** 7. John Cena vs. Dolph Ziggler (TLC) ****
There were a few ***3/4 and ***1/2 matches, but I wanted to keep this to only 4 stars and up. Although I actually did think there were more than 9 matches that were at least **** so I was a little surprised at that number.

I'm amazed so many people think Meltzer has a keener eye towards what makes a good match over a bad match, or a very good match over a great match.
I personally have a tough time finding any match in existance that I enjoyed more than #1 and #2, and dont know why a quarter point would be deducted.

For comparison's sake, these were the *** 3/4 and *** 1/2 PPV matches: *** 3/4: CM Punk v Chris Jericho (WrestleMania) The Rock v John Cena (WrestleMania) Sheamus v Del Rio v Orton v Jericho (Over The Limit) WWE Championship Money In The Bank Ladder Match (Money In The Bank) Randy Orton v Dolph Ziggler (Night Of Champions) *** 1/2: World Heavyweight Championship Elimination Chamber Match (Elimination Chamber) CM Punk v Chris Jericho (Extreme Rules) Chris Jericho v Dolph Ziggler (SummerSlam) Brock Lesnar v Triple H (SummerSlam) Sheamus v Big Show (Hell In A Cell) Ziggler/Del Rio/Barrett/Sandow/Otunga v Orton/Miz/Kofi/Kane/Bryan (Survivor Series) It just goes to show that, for the most part, the actual wrestling matches are high quality... the only problem being that hardly anyone cares.

Question:
Wouldn't it be easier to rank matches out of 100 than ranking something 4 stars and three quarters of a star? I mean that's...kind of a weird way to rank things.

IMO it's more that there's usually one or two good matches per PPV and the rest is BAD filler.

I know that Meltzer mostly rates ppv matches, I still think the match Sheamus and Jericho on smackdown deserves some praise on this list. That plus the match that Christian had with Drew on superstar which was a terrific match as well.

I know what you mean, and in all honesty, I don't follow these rankings with any real intent (I only posted the *** 3/4 and *** 1/2 matches because the OP didn't ;D). But in the end, he kind of is the main wrestling critic out there, so many people go to his word first as to what would be a good match or not, the same way as many people would go to... say... Roger Ebert's reviews to decide what is a good movie or not. That's not to say they've endorsed a few clunkers along the way, but you get what I'm trying to say (I hope). In the end, the best judge is yourself.

That could really clean up if it gets off the ground.

I have a feeling Trish/Bradshaw vs. Nowinski/Gayda would probably have the same rating as Disaster Movie.

What he is, is a long-time observer, who has an almost OCD-level of dedication and consistency and who, more than anyone else, has documented the last few decades of wrestling in a very comprehensive way. And it's fun to consume that. If any random poster here had given a ranking to every big-event match over the last 30 years, I'd love to check those out too.

Sadly no, rather I just look at a lot of sites (some with teams) and try to create a rough consenus that way. It helps that one aspect of my day job involves crunching numbers and extrapolating from the resulting data interpretable statistics.
