The big problem I have with this whole storyline in ASM isn't even really the basis. Its just that at the end of the day none of this will matter at all.
Marvel kills characters off like if they do it enough times they'll get a free subway sandwich or something. Honestly the whole nerd rage stuff happening aside? Does anyone seriously care when a character dies? Like think back to the 70s, when Electra was killed in Daredevil, how it caused a massive shock to people reading it. Now a days Xavier gets killed at the end of XvA and it will mean jack crap in due time.
Its all just a shameless publicity grab. Trying to get headlines for 'OMG SPIDEY DEAD?!" on sites so people will buy the comic. But after time Peter will get his body back, doc ock will somehow come back, and it will all mean nothing. Maybe its just me getting burnt out on the very notion of the 'BIG MEGA CROSS-OVER EVENT' Marvel and DC have been throwing out nonstop. But all these big stories usually just end with things right where they begin. Nothing changes, nothing really shakes anything up.
When Ultimate Peter Parker got killed, and they immediately brought in Miles I really enjoyed it. They made a serious showing that this was the book being closed on Peter and opening on Miles, and they weren't bringing Peter back for a while at least. It had closure, thats the problem with these big stories, they don't feel like they have that.
The big problem I have with this whole thing is the feeling that Marvel and DC are too scared to change anything in a big way, and the fan are for the most part no better. I feel like we should be seeing Franklin and Valeria starting to make a very serious effort to start inheriting the Fantastic Four name and legacy. May Parker should start learning the truth about her dad and that she may have to begin carrying the unearthly huge burden Spider-Man has with the name. None of that is even remotely happening though. I get that what makes these characters and stories so popular is the nogaliga (sp?) factor that goes into them. But sooner or later you have to stop having Franklin be 5...

actually Eddie Brock's dead now. not that I mind, Flash's much better as Venom anyway. Is he? He had cancer for a while but I thought fusing with the Anti-Venom symbiote made him better or something....

I just heard on some other sites I visit that apparently one of my favorite comic writers, Peter David, has suffered a stroke. I hope he's alright and is able to make a full recovery. Right side paralysis at the moment. One hopes he recovers and can continue working and doing anything else he loves.

As a fan of supervillains more than heroes I'm actually quite entertained by the fact Doc Ock has actually won. I mean Peter is effectively dead which is quite an achievement and reaffirms my opinion that Doc Ock is the arch nemesis of Spider-man not Green Goblin.
Plus Spider-Ock broke Scopions jaw off which is probably what Pete should have done ages ago.

This happened in VENOM, didn't it? Yikes - I had Remender's whole run and read it (and liked it)....yet I didn't even remember this until you reminded me of it. ![O_o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/browraise.png) Plus Spider-Ock broke Scopions jaw off which is probably what Pete should have done ages ago. J. Jonah Jameson approved, too (Scorp killed his wife Marla)...

^Now that you mentioned that. Never thought I'd see the day where Jonah approved of Spidey.

Though in the Ultimate Universe, JJJ did eventually become Spidey's biggest supporters after witnessing his heroics firsthand. Funny how all it takes in Marvel-616 is Spider-Man busting up the jaw of the man who killed his wife.

Peter/Spidey and Jonah had been seeing a bit more eye to eye in Slott's run, to be honest. The bumps in the road were still there, but a lot of Jonah's crap toward Spider-Man has been flushed the last couple years (especially since Marla died).

Just got to seeing this. Yeah f*** taking the time to develop and create new heroes to revitalize things and possibly make the next Spider-Man out of it. We need money! I'm just plain f***ing done with Marvel.

I wouldnt worry, the more Avengers Academy is revealed, the more it seems so obvious to be VR and probably involving Grand Master

The problem is that this happened in the main Spider-man storyline.
An elseworld storyline of this would be okay, but the main one........yeah, that's not going to work.

So, with all the negativity surrounding Marvel NOW in this thread, I thought I'd point out two pretty strong positives:
- Jonathan Hickman's Avengers is setting up to be truly epic. He is taking time to build a strong plot that will carry the series for a long time. It's only two issues in, so pick it up if you haven't already. Also, New Avengers by Hickman drops on Wednesday, and will probably have direct tie-ins to the main book.
- All-New X-Men is surprisingly good. It is a lot of fun and any X-fans that haven't been reading for a while should pick it up. Interesting dynamic with present Scott coming face to face with past Jean Grey. It's a good read.

In addition to Hickman's Avengers, I've been enjoying Thor, Hulk and FF a great deal. Granted, the whole idea of a book getting a new #1 "relaunch" when a new creative team arrives is really dumb, but most of the books I've read have been quite good.

That unfortunate flashback in the first issue aside, the new Captain America series is decidedly different from the past few years of espionage action, but I'm liking this sci-fi direction we've gotten.
And of course, Captain Marvel, which is just one of my favorite reads every month.
