Seems like they were trying to hallf-ass the Waylon Mercy style gimmick which failed a year earlier. The whole "nice guy turns ruthless" thing (as ruthless as you can get on WWF Superstars in 1996).

That's a very good question: What WAS his gimmick supposed to be? I remember when I saw him I thought it was just a hack version of Rick Martel with a bad accent. Pretty sure the gimmick was intended as "Look at me, I'm a jerkoff, so boo me".

I saw him as some sort of con man. I never made the connection that he was a mafia gangster, the only thing that was mafioso-ish was his theme, which I thought was awesome. www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7q7Q-WAQl8

Along with Hakushi, Sal Sincere had perhaps my favorite '90s theme song.

....how exactly did the conversion from Sal Sincere to Tom Brandi happen anyway? I think it was when Mero was about to face Sincere before getting on the mic and declaring that he was really jobber Tom Brandi, who got paid to lose to people like Mero. It was pretty lame, really. Then again, Russo was behind it and was trying to be edgy.

Of course he couldn't have worked; he's just a jobber AND HIS NAME ISN'T EVEN SALVATORE SINCERE, IT'S TOM BRANDI

There were several guys in that time period who were very solid workers who would have been excellent contributors to the WWF product, but were prevented from really delivering in the way they could have due to being stuck with the outdated gimmicks. By 1995/1996, wrestling fans were tired of the cartoonish personas in the WWF. Tracy Smothers, Chris Candido, Tom Prichard, Al Snow, Tom Brandi, and PJ Walker/Justin Credible were all solid workers. Unfortunately Freddy Joe Floyd, the Bodydonnas, Avatar, Salvatore Sincere, and Aldo Montoya were laughed at due to the names and gimmicks they were saddled with.

What was Freddie Joe Floyd's gimmick? A street-wise tough guy?

What was Freddie Joe Floyd's gimmick? A street-wise tough guy? Southern Guy. His name was a goof on the Briscos; as wikipedia states it: "His entire gimmick was a rib on Gerald Brisco and Jack Brisco, as they both came from Bowlegs, Oklahoma (the same home town Freddie Joe Floyd was billed as being from). Jack Brisco’s real name is Fred Joe Brisco, and Gerald’s full name is Floyd Gerald Brisco."

The only thing I could think of is 'southern white redneck'. As for Sal Sincere, it probably makes me strange that he's got one of my favorite gimmicks of the '96-'98 period.

He didn't stick around that long and lost just about all his matches. I don't think his gimmick evolved past "southern white redneck" in any significant way.
