Bidding on Priceline can work fairly decent. Never had a bad experience with it or the hotel.
Another thing I've tried is airbnb.com You can rent entire apartments for pretty cheap.

I used Expedia to book my hotel for Wrestlemania this year. I got a hotel in Manhattan near MSG for a decent price.

I've noticed that sometimes if you book online thru the hotels website or call them up you can beat the prices offered on travel sites.
