It astounds me to this day how many people think TRON : Legacy did poorly, it made $172 million domestic, $400 million worldwide, which is pretty good for a sequel to a movie that not only came out twenty eight years beforehand, but was almost totally unavailable for many years before the sequel came out, so most people hadn't even seen it.
And for that matter, the first Tron didn't even do that bad, it grossed just shy of double it's budget, it made more money than Blade Runner that year.
And now they're making a third one, and people are once again wondering why, since the last one did so "poorly"
Were people honestly expecting it to make a billion dollars or something?

Well, it cost $170mil to make/market. These days, you need to make a LOT more than the budget to be considered a success.
And for whatever reason, int'l numbers never seem to count when I see the arguments made. Dunno why.
But there *is* a sequel coming. And Disney got burned BAD with JOHN CARTER, so if they've decided on TRON 3 then they think it was successful.

Tron Legacy also got a mixed critical reception (about 50% RT), and in the internet age, that can damper a movie's reputation. I've run into some people that called Revenge Of The Fallen a "bomb"- it made $800 million globally off of like $250 mill budget/marketing, but the terrible critical reaction killed its legacy.

I liked it. It also made me really want my own downloadable Olivia Wilde.

I liked it a lot, really looking forward to 3. Shame the toyline was so poorly thought out.

And Disney got burned BAD with JOHN CARTER Which sucks, because it was actually a pretty decent movie. It was just WAY too expensive. Cut the budget in half and deliver a movie that's 90% of that quality, and people will look at it completely differently.
