Okay, first off, I barely watch Simpsons anymore and have no clue what's going on these days. But regarding Smithers, is he still in the closet? Yes, we all know he's gay and the writers have gone out of their way to show it. But has there officially been an episode in which Smithers admitted to everyone he is indeed gay?
And him simply kissing Mr. Burns or saying he loves the old guy doesn't count.

Yes and No.
While He's never "Come out" to my knowledge, there have been instances where his sexuality was indeed made mention.
1. "Homer's Phobia" Implied a relationship between Smithers and John Waters 2. Mentions of an Alternate lifestyle in "Sideshow Bob Roberts" in reference to why he was actively working against the Springfield Republican Party 3. In one of the Timeskip episodes (The one where Lisa is President) he takes what is apparently a Hetero-normative injection (Loudly proclaiminbg "I LIKE BOOBIES" afterwards)
Officially according to the writers he WASN'T "Gay" as far as attracted to the Male Gender....but rather SPECIFICALLY Attracted to Mr. Burns (i.e Burn's Gender was simply secondary to the attraction).

Right, and that's what I meant in my OP. I know that they've more than implied for the audience the fact he's gay. I'm just curious if he actually admitted to it.

Officially....I don't think he's ever "Come out". He's seen in the background of "Gay" scenes (When Homer was marrying folks, Moe's Gay Bar, etc.) but yeah...he's never simply come out and said the words "Yup...I'm gay"

Officially I don't think so, but I do think he referred to patrons of Moe's and Smither's gay bar as his people, if that counts.

He is also seen waving, from behind a closet door with Patti when the Gay Pride Parade comes to Springfield.

To answer your question: the real deal with Waylon Smithers is that he's Mr. Burns' assistant. He's in his early 40s, is unmarried, and currently resides in Springfield. Thanks for writing!

He never really came out, but it's been blatant in the last few seasons.

I always figured he was out but the rest of the universe is too oblivious to notice or care.

Also, factor in the episode "Flaming Moe" (not "Flaming Moe's"), where Smithers is turned away from a gay nightclub and helps Moe turn his bar into a gay bar.
Today, the "closeted gay character" in the show is, I believe, Mr. Largo.

Not as such, although I do remember in the episode where Homer was the "Safety Salamander" where both Largo and Smithers were in the same car and Mr. Largo stammered a bit.

I don't think he even know the meaning of the word 'gay'
