I was just reading where led Zeppelin are in talks with different streaming services to possibly off their entire catalog and have it available for streaming.
It was just a few years ago that Zeppelin was one of the main holdouts as far as artists offering their music to Itunes (did they ever make a deal?) and here they are considering a deal that would make their music available for streaming.
So the question is what will this do to a giant like Itunes down the line.
It may be still early in the game but personally I think streaming music is what everyone is going to go to eventually.
It's weird how when cds came out there was an uproar from those that grew up with record albums about how small they were and you now would miss out on stuff like artwork and such, and then there were mp3s and people argued that they wanted physical product and here we are moving toward streaming where we don't even own the mp3 "physically" as it were, it's just out there and we pay for radio basically.
Anyway, thoughts?

I still like having a hard copy of the music, I rarely stream as I'm not always connected to the internet. Old house means running internet through the electrics, thus can't both use xbox live and have my pc online at the same time.

It's rumored iTunes is starting a streaming service soon. They've got everything on place and ate trying to work out a good set of terms with record labels.

I listen to my custom Last.fm station alot. Paid to have it on my Iphone too. I would rather pay for what I want to listen to.

I enjoy Apple products and all, but to be completely honest with you I have doubts that iTunes could compete with Spotify if/when they started a streaming service. Spotify is so easy to use and pretty much has any song you could want and is pretty cheap too. iTunes is still trying to solve UI problems and the fact that it's a really slow program (your mileage may vary) that I don't know how well streaming would work.

I'm one of those dinosaurs who still prefers to have a hard copy, and the bands I listen to still seem happy to oblige.

Having an actual copy > Being reliant on a net connection. iTunes allowing you to stream anything you own on a different device is a decent compromise between the two.

I cant see streaming being very popular. What if you want to listen to music but you're in an area that either doesnt have wi-fi or requires payment for wi-fi (like in a plane)?

I like using Pandora, but I also like getting to listen to the songs I want when I want. With Pandora I am at the mercy of a random playlist and will be lucky to listen to a song I was hoping to listen to.

For example, i made an Alice Cooper radio playlist and it had NONE of his more recent albums, nor any of his 1980-88 work. Same with Judas Priest, i made a priest radio and it only had the major label albums, no jugulator or demolition.

This is what's going on in radio though, the biggest of the biggest and most well known songs. I know this isn't radio, but this is what media seems to be doing-trimming the fat as it were and there are some incredible songs lost. One day there will be people that stumble on to the band Judas Priest, who don't know their history and may never bother to learn about songs not offered via streaming music services and they'll be none the wiser-which sucks

Granted its not perfect, but at least theres plenty of stations with more variety.

Just to throw it out there for the sake of context, it wasn't until last year (in my experience) that streaming music actually began paying relatively well.
Streaming services increased their pay to artists from 1/10th of a cent-per-stream to one cent per stream. While that's still a 99th of what iTunes charges, it is a pretty significant increase.

I love Spotify. You can just listen to full albums as you like or do an artist random playlist or like artists. They have done a damned good job of making it easy to use and giving you options.
I know more people who stream now than use actually mp3s as well.

Does it have a shuffle mode (thats one of my fav parts of mp3 players)? I like the mystery of never knowing what song will come up next.

I don't understand streaming music. I want to choose what I listen to, and I want to choose when I listen to it. What possible improvement could streaming provide that would be superior to having the songs I want on my computer and on my iPod?
