I've no idea if those numbers are good, but at least there was a steady increase. I'd wager The Rock's appearance was good for business?

Not bad at all. It's rare that the figures rise throughout the show, and presumably that late spike was for The Rock's appearance. Maybe it helped putting the title match in the second hour too.

Over 4 million for the entire show, that's good. Even with the hype and Rock, it was going against the National Championship Game between 2 of the biggest college football programs ever.

Well this was: The Raw Figures from 12/31
Viewer totals: 8:00- 3.40 million 9:00- 3.64 million 10:00- 3.61 million
---
So they've improved on the holiday numbers by a lot. So that's good.

If only they built up the guys who are there year-round they wouldn't need to rely on Rock to finally increase ratings in the 3rd hour.
We'll see all these part-timers for the next 3 months and then the guys who are being put on the back burner will be blamed for the low ratings in April.

I knew the ratings would increase buy the third hour because the football game sucked. By the third quarter I think many people stopped watching the game because Alabama crush Notre Dame.

What was the viewership for the last, non-holiday episode of Raw? If only they built up the guys who are there year-round they wouldn't need to rely on Rock to finally increase ratings in the 3rd hour. That wouldn't work for one big reason: those guys are there all year. What makes The Rock and all the other part-timers work is that they're kept off TV until it's time to build to their match, making it so that it's actually a big deal to see them. And thusly, the viewership increases. With the Rock working every show up until WrestleMania, you'll see what I'm talking about. Sooner or later, the numbers will fall back to average because the novelty of a fresh Rock feud will fade, and people will go back to checking out the segments on the Internet (just as we saw last year, in fact). PPV buys will probably still do well (as they have for most of 2012, part-timers or no), but people won't be inclined to rush to their televisions every Monday night. And then Rock will enter into a new feud with someone else, and ratings will rise again when he returns. And the cycle will continue.

^ Not true.
You realise the attitude era didn't need a return of a big start to pop the rating right?
Quality wrestlers with personality and interesting storylines can pop the ratings consistently.

The attitude era didn't need the return of big stars because the big stars were the guys on the active roster.

^ Not true. You realise the attitude era didn't need a return of a big start to pop the rating right? I do. Do you realize that things have changed since the Attitude Era? Back in 1999, I couldn't jump onto YouTube a few hours after the show ended and see the whole thing. I had to catch Raw right then and there, because if I didn't, I wouldn't get another chance. But they'll never get things up to Attitude levels with the amount of overexposure. Austin and Rock in '99 worked under much different circumstances than the guys do today.

Good show. I agree with an earlier post. The game being a blowout was best for the third hour.

The fact that ratings actually went up a bit (compared to usual, not talking about from one hour to the next) while going against the BCS title game is very impressive.
Confirms that not only will people tune in to see the Rock, they'll do it in a big way.

Down just under 2 million from Rock's last appearance (Raw 1000). First time in the 4 million range since the Raw after TLC I think.
