Was fantasy booking a bit, and I got the idea of putting John in a tag team with a younger talent, preferably someone flashier like Bateman, Ryder or even Johnny Curtis. And I think it would be a perfect fix to all of his issues, character and booking wise.
Let's say he's with Bateman, chasing the Shield's tag team title. For fans that claim that Cena shrugs things off too often: notice that he rarely ever acts nonchalant when he's concerned about someone else. Ryder, Tatsu, Cena Sr, Lawler in the steel cage, AJ before the inevitable backstab, all brought out Cena's empathy. With a tag partner he actually likes for once, Bateman in Ricky Morton spots (or vice versa) would be no different. Plus his USA Guy persona would put Cena into a straight-man role, so he'd (sadly, for me) be less of a ham.
On top of that, his star power would give a jolt to the already improving tag division, and it'd keep him in a prominent spot on the card while fresher main eventers go after the world titles.

Cena needs to be freed from his petty attachments. They make him WEAK!!

Would making the tag division revolve around Cena really do anything to help it? It's in pretty good shape right now without him.

Evan Bourne would have been perfect.

This worked well with Kofi after a tired merry-go-round US/IC title run between 2009-2011. Sometimes guys need to branch out and do new things after doing the same thing for so long. I just don't know if Cena in the tag division would work out the best for everyone. It would be an interesting change for him, though.

People would complain that Cena is using whatever wrestler he's tagging with to get support from the fans that hate him.
People would also complain that whatever wrestler Cena's tagging with is being held back because he has to play the part of "sidekick".

Yes, it would keep Cena away from main events of any sort so that there can be some shaking up of the scene, it elevates the tag titles because Cena gives a shit about them and it elevates whoever beats Cena's team for the titles.

It would be the first time in a long time that the tag titles main event a PPV...

Did Cena ever defend a tag team title on a pay per view?

Alex Riley would be perfect for this. With his and Cena's similar looks, in-ring styles (Riley even has a very noticeable and obvious Moves of Doom sequence) he could be treated as Cena's buddy. Like they can go back and forth on the mic
Riley: "John Cena called me a ham sandwich backstage. I got mad and called him a poopyhead." Cena: "And that's when I realized this kid was just like me"
You can even have this be the catalyst for Zack Ryder's heel turn, because he's pissed and jealous that Cena and Riley have "the happy life that WE were supposed to have", and Ryder brings in Curt Hawkins to help him get revenge, and we an instant tag team feud.

He should. Every main eventer had a long tag run, like Hogan with Macho, Rock with Foley, Sting with Bulldog and others, Taker with Kane, etc

It doesn't keep him away from main events. It just makes the tag titles a main event belt. Exactly, Or at least, it gives it the potential to possibly main event. But WWE's shown they've got no qualms with sticking Cena in the middle of a show, especially as of late, so in most cases it probably wouldn't main event- but the tag scene sure gets elevated (even further). Thus, he gets featured enough for his fans without cluttering the main event, and without needing to turn heel even. Plus so long as the younger partner can keep up with Cena, they'll get a huge rub.

They need to put Cena in tag matches where his partner isn't going to betray him first.

I say pair Cena with Randy Orton. Give them a long run, and then Orton turns on Cena with the heel turn. Sure we end up with another repetitive Cena/Orton feud, but at this point it would be in the upper midcard rather than the main focus of the show.

Cena and Big E. wrecking everyone in the tag division would be fun.

' Using Cena's star power for the tag divisionon would really help out a lot, and it could help move towards streamlining the roster and the title heirarchy.. With Cena in the tag division, the tag team division will be booked to be more important. If Cena + whomever his partner may be are Tag Team Champion, then they could easily headline the house shows that the WWE Champion isn't on, thus negating the need for a second World Title. And with Cena OUT of the World Title picture, there will be plenty of room for new talent to get title opportunities, even with just one main belt.

Cena and his partner would elevate the titles briefly while they have it. They'll then streamroll through all the other tag teams in the division, thus making them all look like jokes. They'll then lose the titles in a very screwy fashion, so as not to make them look bad, but at the same time not making the team that won it look good. Then the division will go back to the way it was, and Cena's tag team reign will never be mentioned again.
