What I do is substitute the meatballs for Italian Sausage, pan fry them and then mix them into the sauce, with spices, and then have them with the pasta.
I'd actually say it's a lot better.

I usually cook the sausage first, deglaze the pan with some onions and garlic, add the tomato sauce and herbs, toss the sausage back in and simmer for 10 minutes, add the (half-cooked pasta) and simmer for a further 5-10 minutes. Damn good eating. When using meatballs, 25 minutes tops.
