I'm just watch ECW One Night Stand 2005, and talking it up to a friend of mine, and it occurred to me that if I had a wrestling promotion now, and I got Mike Awesome in, I would make him my world champion for 100 years.
I can't even remember if his promo skills were any good, but f*** it nor were Brock's, I'd just give Paul Heyman or somebody to Awesome as well while we worked on his skills.
If you had a promotion now, what wrestler at what stage in their career would be your ideal champ?
I'm not talking about popularity or crowd reaction, I mean what YOU ideally would look for in a champ.
Awesome for me has it all. He's a huge guy, he's agile, can work basically any style, a quite unique moveset (because of his combo of power wrestling and high flying) and he loves the powerbomb (my favourite wrestling move without doubt). Give that man the title.

I'm not talking about popularity or crowd reaction, I mean what YOU ideally would look for in a champ. If I ever ran a promotion, then a popular guy who draws great reactions would be my ideal world champion. So I can't really take that out of the equation.

Well let's just say that the fans reacted to whatever storyline you came up with exactly the way you wanted to. No John Cena mega-babyfaces that are heels to half the audience. You book a guy as a heel, he gets a heel reaction.

The Miz. Even as a mid card jobber, he carries himself like a top star and makes whatever he's doing feel important. So as the World Champion of some backwater indy fed, he'll hype my promotion up as a huge deal.

Crowd reaction + wrestling ability = world championship material.

Right now, I feel like CM Punk is the best choice, but if Brock was full-time I'd put the strap back on him.

For me it's actually the 80s Hulk Hogan type - "who's ever going to beat this guy?" I like a champion to seem invincible, both in the storyline, and behind the scenes. So when a guy even gets CLOSE to beating him, it's kind of big deal, and when he's finally dethroned, it's a huge moment.

Some of you aren't really entering into the spirit of the thread.
Some bookers were known to have a certain type that they loved to make champion. Not the ones who'd put it on themselves - but how Vince went through a hoss phase, and then a little guy phase for various reasons; like how Bill Watts would put his most prestigious title on a black guy wherever he went.

Somebody like Kurt Angle, Daniel Bryan or HBK as long-term heel champions.
They're all credible as champions but their comparative small size means they're always vulnerable, they can have great matches with other good wrestlers, work in different styles, can make the monster of the month look good and are still charismatic enough to carry stories and do comedy. There's enough variety in their shticks to allow for a lengthy reign and when they do lose they can make the new top face look like a genuine mega-star.
They're all permanently over too which means it doesn't matter how bad I screw up.

If the man is able to sell asses to seats eighteen inches apart while putting on a show, no matter what that particular show is, I want him.

Well since anyone is on the board, I'd pick Randy Savage in a heartbeat.

I'll just choose from current active wrestlers, I know that's not in the spirit of the thread but it's too big a question to choose an ideal champion from any era.
Kurt Angle's already been mentioned and he's the first name that popped into my head. Charismatic, able to be goofy or insane, makes wrestling look real, and always brings his A game to whatever he does.
In the second tier of possible champions/challengers I'd have Daniel Bryan, Brock Lesnar, The Rock, Alberto Del Rio, CM Punk, Robert Roode. Third tier (challengers) I'd have the likes of Dolph Ziggler, Austin Aries, Big Show, Kevin Steen, Wade Barrett, Mr Anderson/Kennedy.

A no-nonsense badass that believes he's the best wrestler in the world and has the skills to back his claims up. Daniel Bryan could probably pull it off.
If I couldn't find somebody that fit that role, I would go in the opposite direction. Pick out the ultimate underdog. Somebody who, while not necessarily a midget, is on the smaller side but makes up for his lack of size with heart. Despite being the champ, his opponent would almost always be considered the favorite going into title matches but he would always find some way to pull it out in the end. El Generico would be perfect for the role.

A robot I've had assembled that has the charisma of The Rock, the wrestling ability of Shawn Michaels and the dedication to their job as John Cena.
