Link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZYm0XrKPmYJust randomly rewatching this... Cena sounded/felt so unprofessional as shit in this promo. Granted, he was in his hometown but dude came out as a f***ing douche. Rock looked/sounded legit pissed (inb4It'sStillRealToMe), but nah it's true though. I was pissed at Cena (more so than Rock's sudden loss of mic skills) during this whole buildup just because it felt like he wasn't taking this serious enough (how ironic because that was the reason he lost at WrestleMania). I'm just reopening closed wounds talking about this shit...

From my recollection, Cena was regularly outdoing The Rock on the mic. He was cutting legit, emotional promos, and he looked like a guy who was preparing for the match of his life. Rock, on the other hand, seemed more interested in making corny jokes about Cena, and talking about Twitter. But still, lots of the IWC ate it up, because "CENA SUX LOL ATTITUDE RULZ!!!11!!!" Rock came across as a douche who was acting like a little kid IMO.

How did you want Cena to act?
The whole thing leading up to the match was that Cena DIDN'T respect Rock. It had a good real tension feel to it and I dug it a lot more than some of the other segments.
I think it really shows how good these guys are. When Cena or Rock is out there nobody is doing the lame hipster "Go along with it! It's kooky" wrestling thing. People had some real emotion in this feud

That Boston promo was when I started hating the feud because it felt less like watching the characters and more like watching the actors - and honestly I hate that.

Cena basically whined most of the build up, saying "I'm here, you're not!" over and over and over again, and then made a series of gay jokes until the final few weeks. Rock did his schtick, but then went into pretty good detail about why he really didn't like Cena, why he left, what he mean, and what he was trying to do. Cena promptly ignored it, pretended he only ever talked about clothes and fanbases and repeated the "I'm here and you're not!" ad nauseum. Since then, the only thing people seem to remember is Fruity Pebbles. It's a shame because the last few weeks, when Cena dropped the tired schtick and finally started getting into what the match meant for him, were really good. But by then, they had squandered it.

Nothing about that last year made sense. I get what they wanted but instead of having both guys treat the other as an equal and make good points, they had Rock play dumb and Cena not care and all it did was piss off Rock fans and make Cena look worse somehow.
I guess it all sets up this year with Cena going serious and talking about how he won't be taking Rock lightly and Rock talking about having no doubts or rust but ugh.

I don't know... maybe I'm too use to seeing Mr. Goody Too Shoes, John Cena be all noble and respectful, then this promo comes along and he's got his Boston accent back out of nowhere, and he's looking at the crowd almost laughing the whole time while Rock is trying to be serious.
Even at the end he goes into the crowd to celebrate as he had won something and even drinks and throws it into the camera like he's a hot shot.
It just semi-pissed me off because I was looking forward to good promos during the buildup and all we got was a half-assed Rock and "You're never here!" from Cena.

And don't even bring up Rock all of a sudden writing scribble on his wrists because that's not his thing AT ALL. Almost 300 promos and I've never seen such thing on his wrists or anywhere before.
He's The Rock!
On top of all that they mentioned that promo once after that and that was that.
I had no idea where they were going for there.

It would be funny if The Rock started sweating and the writing on his arm smeared. "John Cena, the Rock says thi-Aw, dammit!" I think we'll get better stuff from Rock/Punk, especially if Rock can step his game up after being demolished by Punk in their first confrontation.

So they gave Cena a "prop" he could shoot on to win points.

If you let the Rock have legitimate ammunition, you risk people being against Cena, who to be fair needs the protection more since he's the active wrestler.

They were going for 50/50. So they gave Cena a "prop" he could shoot on to win points. It's going to be hilarious when it's a lot closer to 50/50 for Rock/Punk (and that's after essentially retconning his entire post-pipebomb face run) than it was for Rock/Cena, when they actively tried to make it so.

Rock ripped Cena's merch, but they never had Cena mention Rock had pretty much the same s***.

When they had to try to make Cena seem right/the good guy/the cool guy in most circumstances fans have a right to say "bullshit" to it. I mean the WWE got some fans onside with it so it worked a tiny bit, but if they had the Rock we saw last Monday on Raw come out against Cena for 4 months Cena would be absolute rubble, and I actually think Cena's a decent promo man.

Rock and Cena were cutting promos on each other for a year, even with two guys as gifted as them there were going to end up being a bunch of duds.
I think Cena did some of his best work - and honestly, I like Cena on the mic more than I like him in the ring - but Rock did some good stuff too.

That feud went sour on me when it became clear that they were obviously trying to make Cena look better on the mic. I grew up watching Rock from 97 onwards. There is no way in hell that his apparent lack of mic skills wasn't scripted. I just hope they let Rock/Punk do their own thing all the way until past the Rumble.

What are you talking about? All of Rock's segments in 97 were designed to make him look better than other people. He wasn't 'shoot catchphrasing'.
