What if, lets say, Daid Otunga won the Royal Rumble? If booked right, could it help him get over as an upper-card guy? Would it play out Ike Jack Swagger's Money in the Bank win ?

If he wins the title at Mania he could get a mini title to fit around his coffee mug.

Hmm, I feel like ten years ago it might play out as a big deal, spring-boarding him to the marquee. Nowadays, he's probably just gonna jerk the curtain at WM for whichever of the world titles is the less important.

He would lose his title match before or at elimination chamber one way or another

If there was ever at time for this to happen, it'd be this 2-world title era where you can put the title match lower on the card. It'd probably be best if it was an over babyface as opposed to an upstart heel. I think you could built up almost anyone to be a threat over the 2 months before Mania.

It needs to happen. It would help create a new superstar. The rumble should be used to create a new superstar or an emerging superstar. The problem with it is Money in the Bank. Seems all the new contenders come from there.

Why they didn't do it with Santino still baffles me. There were several ways to either book him as the Rocky-like underdog for Mania or have him lose the shot before then, but that was a "moment" they just completely blew. That place would have EXPLODED if he won.

The WWE would never take that kind of risk with a midcarder. Although, THIS year might be the best opportunity to do it with Rock vs. Punk being the clear main event of the show.

I think a random winner would be a good thing, because the WWE could always point to that year as an example of "Anything can happen & anyone can win the Royal Rumble!"

I'd mark out if some random-ass legend that they bring in for a nostalgia pop won. Vader wins the rumble in 2013? Sure, why not?

How about Kofi? Maybe they have plans for him. Seems abrupt how he lost the IC title, and the rematch almost immediately afterward.

I'd love to see it happen. Something unpredictable happening in the WWE? Yeah, I'm for it.

It would kill the gimmick unless the winner went on to get a monster push.

It should be Alex Riley. It would be a nice way to build him back up. And since so many Rock/Cena II or Rock/Punk II, dreaded HHH/Lesnar II, or Taker's match will be main eventing WrestleMania anyway, they can afford to take risks on different talents. Put him up against Punk or someone he's used to working with like Ziggler, and they could put on a solid, exciting match. And if they don't have faith in him to work WM, then I have no problem with them going the Cena in 2008 and having him cash in his title match at the Feb. PPV, whether that be for a one on one match or for a spot in the Elimination Chamber. But he doesn't have to win. If he does, it doesn't have to last very long. It would kill the gimmick unless the winner went on to get a monster push. I don't think the winner needs to have a monster push. I would rather someone win, and while they may not win the title, they'd still have the Rumble win on their resume to give them credibility and make them look like a threat. Like I'd rather see stars made just by winning the Rumble, rather than simply slapping the WHC on them and expecting us to actually believe they're on the same level as the WWE Champion.

It'd have to be a guy that was over and who could still work a little. Like Kevin Nash a year or two ago? They could have built up a Mania midcard match for the WHC - Nash v. Daniel Byran or something. I'm not saying they SHOULD have done that, but that's the kind of spot where it could work - have a babyface legend against a champion heel who isn't quite a "star" yet.
