www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKFyI7pqqLgWell, not mine actually, but 1993 was the year of the Lex Express. On a note relevant to WWE current I will say that I'd mark if they let Punk keep the title until Summerslam. Then some up and comer like Ryback could beat him by count out for a huge celebration...only for it to be announced that the title does NOT change hands and therefore CM Punk RETAINS the WWE Championship.

That storyline was so cynical.

Ryback should get on a bus with Adam Richman of Man vs Food and crisscross the nation accepting different food challenges all the while bashing Punk.
Then it could lead to your scenario.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, we are sorry to announce that Ryback will not be appearing at WM, due to elevated liver enzymes, as well as pre-diabetes and a dangerously high cholesterol level!"

I love the awkward, over long and slightly sinister smile at 2:00.

I was a huge Lex Luger mark during that time. Too bad his lame count-out victory over Yokozuna pretty much derailed any momentum he had.

Lex Luger is still my hero. Hard for him not to be, considering that he's one of the biggest legends stars ever in this GAAAAAAAAAAH

He was no hero of mine. Should have stayed as The Narcissist a while longer imo.

As an 8 year old in '93, I know I was probably supposed to love Luger, but I couldn't stand the guy. I thought the Lex Express and that stupid song was incredibly cheesy, and I couldn't get into his character's cornball patriotism. I actually remember rooting for Yokozuna at the time.
This makes me think I was some sort of jaded smark even at a young age, but then again I think I loved Sparky Plugg so maybe I just had terrible taste.

The Lex Express...that's seriously the last thing I remember about wrestling from when I was watching it non-stop as a kid to the 4-5 year hiatus I took from it when I turned 14 or so.

Have I ever mentioned how I hate "X years ago today/this year" threads? I already know before clicking into them that they're going to make me feel incredibly old ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) Anyway, with my little bit of self-pity out of the way: We didn't have the right channel for wrestling at the time so I never got into Luger. I had been a huge Hogan mark, so being a white meat babyface might have sold me on him but then again I loved Bret Hart, so who knows!

It was one part "drape someone in the flag" + one part Vince McMahon "look at his muscles!" homoeroticism. That video couldn't sum it up any better. It proved that Hogan was the right gay guy at the right time. Would be like if John Cena left the WWE and then they decided, "okay, Ryback, you're John Cena now!"

If I had the chance to book now, I'd do this exact angle with Derrick Bateman. Same music and everything. It would be done for somewhat comedic purposes, but Bateman's whole USA guy character is a bit comedic. But, I would also have him be serious and go after Antonio Cesaro, and instead of building to a WWE Title match and having the company dependant on it, I would have it just in a midcard match for the US Title.
I'd love to see it for Wrestlemania. Instead of Antonio Cesaro being apart of a body slam challenge, basically Derrick comes out for weeks getting after him for his anti-American sentiments on the people, and then Cesaro challenges any American in the back. Bateman beats him, and that's when the Derrick Express starts. We could also have him meet Lex Luger, which would be stealing an idea Chikara did.
Anyway, as a young child, I do remember the Lex Express, but I guess I wasn't a major Lex Luger fan in comparison to Bret Hart.
Also, a few years ago, Kenn Doane had a picture on WWE.com from his personal collection of him with Lex during the whole Lex Express deal, which was pretty cool to see.

I'll forever be a Luger mark.
In my eyes he can do no wrong.

I marked the hell out when he first got out of the helicopter and then when he slammed Yokozuna. I wanted him to win the title so bad.

Nah, I was a kid just getting into pro wrestling during the New Generation, and I thought All-American patriotic Lex Luger was incredibly lame too.
