Seriously, that was his greatest face incarnation, and if or when he turns again he should use that. He wasn't just a generic guy that didn't do drugs like his 2007-2008 version, and yet he wasn't that irritating paranoid douche we got during his HHH feud. It was a perfect mix of what a top face should be- intense when necessary, but loose enough to goof on the faces and stir up the crowd.
I know the self-aware wisecracker face is generally regarded as something worse than ebola, but he's one of the few people in WWE aside from Cena that does it well, which is more than I can say for Sheamus (who should be booked more crazy, like a slightly smarter Hacksaw Jim Duggan).
As for "clownshoes" and "goatface", I didn't mind those. Coming from someone of lesser mic skill they would have turned into Bobby Lashley "NO"-esque memes.

Without Punk, there would be no Goatface.

I think most incarnations of CM Punk are more entertaining and genuine than Clownshoes Toolbox CM Punk.

"Clownshoes" wasn't even his. He ripped it from Kevin Smith movies.

"Clownshoes" wasn't even his. He ripped it from Kevin Smith movies. None of that was him. It came across insincere because it was fake and he wasn't feeling it. This was an awful period for the Punker.

This was an awful period for the Punker. Somebody needs to tell him to start phoning in his performances then the next time he turns face, because I liked that Punk a hell of a lot more than the elitist prick we got before it. Granted, HHH wasn't speaking for everybody when he told Punk that a lot of fans already enjoyed the WWE product fine at the time, but for the most part, he was correct. (For what it's worth, I know a lot of fans wanted HHH to be the heel there, but I wouldn't have booked them to feud in the first place. In retrospect, Laurinaitis was a much better choice for the role of corporate figurehead.)

Sure he's competent enough to play "bland generic guy", but you could get The Miz to play "bland generic guy". You can't get just anyone to play CM Punk when he's being more like himself.

I enjoyed it when he gave Triple H and Kevin Nash a few home truths, but I found him pretty insufferable thereafter. He seems like a guy who thinks he's a lot cooler than he actually is. Most of his wisecracks made me cringe.

Well, you're a big Cena fan so I'm not surprised you'd love that Punk, which along with Sheamus, was just another variant of Cena.
I mean it wasn't bad and he moved a pile of merchandise, but that character was kind of waste.

My only problem with this run is that it made the CM Punk character seem lazy, or at the very least a bullshitter.
He was all about bringing change to the WWE until he was champion. Then he dropped that act and was content because he was the top guy, so screw everything else.
That's why I actually love this current heel run, because it runs with that theory. It's an example of a good retcon.

But not everyone shares the same bubble-world outlook as you. and yet, here we are in a thread started by someone else who preferred a non-Punkish version of Punk as a face. Still, I overstated a bit. CM Punk's early ECW run, through I think his first MiTB cash-in was fairly true to himself and I found him an okay face.

I think the fact that heel Punk STILL can't get boo'd a lot of the time shows how successful he was as a face. I didn't like "Clownshoes" or "Toolbox" either, but at least it was entertaining, unlike what we have now imo.

July 2011 to July 2012. It was all great for me. The promo on Laurinaitis was amazing, the original pipebomb, the contract negotiation with Vince, the post MITB/pre-Summerslam weeks where he was in full loose cannon mode, brilliance. The only thing I have any complaint about is the stupid Summerslam title loss and the Kevin Nash/HHH crap. But I LOVED face Punk.

Aside from the fall of 2011, I didn't think babyface Punk really worked. It seemed like he was gritting his teeth from having to suck up to the fans. The guy's a natural heel, and I think he loves to be hated.
