Now I don't see this spoken about often at all. In 1995, at September's "In Your House" - Fan Friendly WWF President Gorilla Monsoon had decided to book a very interesting match where all WWF Championships would be on the line in the same match.
WWF Champion Diesel and Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels would face the WWF Tag Team Champions Owen Hart and Yokozuna. With whomever being pinned losing their title or titles.
I remember actually really looking forward to this match. I don't know if they booked it in response to Nitro starting around the same time, but I loved that WWF were doing something really different. Obviously HBK and Diesel becoming Tag Champions didn't stick due to Owen being late to the match after he'd already been replaced by Bulldog, so it was all kind of pointless really. But I really enjoyed the idea and the build up. You know, could Owen Hart beat Diesel for the WWF Title, could Yokozuna have beat HBK and become Intercontinental Champion? It was intriguing stuff for WWF in 1995.

I like the promo at the end of SummerSlam where Gorilla announced the match. Jim Cornette was there with him, and at first, when Gorilla announced that Diesel and Shawn were getting a tag title shot, he started ranting and raving about how they already had titles. Then, when Gorilla mentioned that the WWF and IC titles were on the line, Cornette suddenly becomes overjoyed and tried to shake Gorilla's hand.

I think they intentionally tried to do something different. Fall '95 was a weird time for attempts at innovation. '96 is seen as the transitional year allowing the Attitude Era to really begin to take shape in '97, but before they could figure out what worked for the company, they went through a bunch of ideas that (while not bad on paper and certainly worth a shot) didn't set the world on fire. Look at the Wild Card Survivor Series that year. Look at the influx of Japanese women's talent. Look at how comparatively frequent face-vs-face matches were next to any other time in the company's history. While many have looked at this time as a company in tailspin, or at least desperation, I think there's something to be said for trying to bring some different ideas to the table.

It's just a fun match. I was young and wasn't a wrestling fan when it happened, but when I discovered it I thought it was a really cool concept and was pumped for the Backlash 2001 match with the same stips.

I liked the idea. I usually hate when tag team matches main event pay-per-views. There are usually no major consequences for losing so it doesn't hold my interest. That one did, and the Owen twist made it even more memorable. Shawn and Diesel giving up the titles afterward though was BS.

I loved the idea for the match. It's still one of my favorite stipulations I've ever heard. It's just all the possibilities available, and the fact that it's 3 top entities going at it, looking for more glory. Also I was a fan of all 4 wrestlers.
The twist was a letdown. It was a letdown the minute Owen was taken out. Nothing against Bulldog, but I really didn't want to see him in that match.

It was a poor bait & switch job, because they didn't follow through with their promise. If you don't have the balls to do a major title change, don't charge people PPV money to find out the next night nothing mattered.

How? Cornette didn't think Shawn and Diesel needed a shot at the tag titles due to them already holding the two singles titles. He thought Diesel and Shawn had everything to gain and nothing to lose until Gorilla pointed out that Shawn and Diesel's titles were also on the line. Cornette was then okay with the match because now Owen and Yoko had something to gain.

Nah, it's just that usually it goes like this: - Babyface authority figure makes a stipulation for a match that favors the heels, or at least gives the heel something they want. The crowd isn't too happy about it. - The heel(s) act overjoyed and thank the babyface authority figure, and try to suck up to them. - NOT SO FAST, as the babyface authority figure has one more piece of information - and it's something that favors the BABYFACE(s) in the storyline, gets a big pop from the crowd, and leaves the heel(s) fuming and blowing a fit, yelling things like "YOU CAN'T DO THAT" while the face's music plays.

That's the normal approach but it wouldn't have worked in this context. You can't reveal that two singles titles are on the line in a tag team match, then announce that the tag titles are being defended too. It's anticlimactic.

Plus, the promo was only shown to the home audience, so getting the live crowd to react in a certain way wasn't an issue.

It was a letdown the minute Owen was taken out. I was only 12 at the time but even then I thought the substitution was super lame and killed the entire match.
