Australia has some HMVs. They tried to make it a franchise in Australia, but they could not compete with JB HiFi, a store of similar size but with cheaper prices.

Hopefully this will not affect the Canadian HMV stores. It will not. HMV Canada was sold off years ago, and the company it was sold to are interested in the UK stores now

Im tempted to go in to HMV and if they wont accept my gift card, leave it on the counter as I walk out with the equivilant price in stock.
Hated HMV for years, and as a company Im glad its gone down (though obviously its a shame people are now out of employment). Its prices are inconsistant and ridiculously high for what they are (£80? for a season of dr who when i can buy the boxset of all 4 from amazon for under £40? yeah jog on) x

I said it on Twitter yesterday that it does not matter what financial status a company is in, if they refuse to except a gift card/voucher... then they are thieving f***s.

It's sad news but not hard to understand why when you see how much they charge for new DVDs and Blu-rays. Pisses me off that they won't accept Gift Vouchers any more, they've already got the money from them. They are so inconsistent and with prices. The Dark Knight Rises was £10 on DVD from it's release up until a week ago. Now it's £15.99. Honestly don't understand how they can price certain things so high as well. Supermarkets are also a death blow. Why go to a specialist retailer when you can just pick up the releases you want with your weekly shopping, also sometimes on better deals. Sometimes if you spend over £40 you can get a new release for £5.

Someone will buy the brand name and turn it into an exclusively internet-only company

Ah crap. When I make my rare visit to Milton Keynes Central HMV is the first place I visit. Actually went there on New Years Eve while the sales were on. Wonder what that will end up being now?

For the US posters, what is HMV?
Is it similar to our FYE here?

it's a music/video store, one of the better ones actually (at least in Canada it is).

I just find it disgusting that if they're not going to honour money that people have already spent with them then they should have given whatever warning they could (ie we think we about to go into administartion, if you want to redeem vouchers get in now) to not warn customers is fairly dishonest x

I have legitimatly seen (and be burnt by) them selling the same product, in the same rack for up to 3 different prices on many occasions. Eg picked up Dr.Who revisitations for £28 last weekend, the copy behind that one was priced at £35 for the exact same thing x

For the US posters, what is HMV? Is it similar to our FYE here? Yep. Right down to the ridiculous over-pricing of pretty much everything. The only time I (and so it seems did a lot of people) went in there was when they had one of their "3 for £10" sales or something similar, so I could catch up on some films I may have missed out on. Then again, I still have some DVDs I bought and never watched just to make up the deal.

It amazes me that in an age where people can order something from Amazon right on their phone, some still go to that store and pay three times as much for the same thing.

Pisses me off that they won't accept Gift Vouchers any more, they've already got the money from them. we did the same thing when Blockbuster closed. I thought it was a total load of crap. we couldn't even check them to see what they were worth to give in-store credit. and it's all legal, stores are under no legal obligation to to honor giftcards. It's actually against the law for them to accept gift vouchers whilst in adminstration as the holders of vouchers become creditors and they have to sort out the larger debts first. I'm mega pissed off I cant spend my vouchers and I haven't thanked the family member its from yet and don't want to thank them now as it will be akward conversation, first world problems eh?
