I just watched this after not seeing it for a few years, and I just noticed that Lance Russell, (the original commentator for the actual Jerry Lawler/ Andy Kaufman match) was given the role as the ring announcer while Jim Ross was given the commentator role. If anything the roles should have been reversed. Better yet, not have JR in it all, or maybe as the referee, since Lane Russell was also the original ring announcer for those Memphis matches. I mean the people who were involved in Andy's life that were still alive at the time of filming should have pointed that out.
This goes double for that awful Jesse Ventura biopic as far inaccuracy goes. The Montreal screwjob while he and "Gorilla Monsoon"were commentating...really?!?

They did address at the beginning of the movie that things were switched around and such though, so it isn't a real big deal.
Hell, if you want to get nitpicky, the Kaufman/Lawler feud continued WAY beyond the one match that they showed, eventually even bringing Jimmy Hart into the mix.

I haven't seen it yet surprisingly, but I would be really anal about things if I was the director. I heard Letterman even wore his glasses for his part-that's just lazy, unless he is totally blind now

Most likely the JR thing was something between the WWE and the production company. Have a feeling Lance was in it because Lawler pushed to have Lance in there somewhere.

I loved the flick. The little inaccuracies in no way detracted from the actual story. And it at least was pretty faithful to Andy's biography 'Lost in the Funhouse'.

Very good film. It's weird watching Danny DeVito now after years of seeing him play Frank Reynolds. Kind of jarring.

It felt very "made for TV" to me.

I liked Man on the Moon and I always assumed that JR had the better "movie" voice where as Lance can sound kind of monotone to be honest. This goes double for that awful Jesse Ventura biopic as far inaccuracy goes. The Montreal screwjob while he and "Gorilla Monsoon"were commentating...really?!? But what is this from? I have never heard of Ventura's biopic, but how could it possibly be that off??

worst innaccuarcy is how they display the carnagie hall/ "milk and cookies" show as his last hurrah before he dies. That took place years before he was diagnosed with cancer. but other than that its a good flick. carey got oscar snubbed thats for damn sure

Jim Carey did a great job playing Kaufman. It's a shame not enough people saw this movie. The Lawler feud was cut short, but I believe that's how it happened in real-life as well. Didn't Kaufman stop wrestling before the final blowoff match? Or maybe he was supposed to win at the end. I dunno.

As I recall, Jesse called the match between Goldberg and Kanyon, where Goldberg got screwed out of the title, Jesse quit in protest. Yeah, those were the guys they used. It was inducted into WrestleCrap, it's wicked far off.

Didn't Kaufman stop wrestling before the final blowoff match? Or maybe he was supposed to win at the end. I dunno. Kaufman kept going back for at least a year/year and a half. It didn't do his career any favors, and by the end the fans in Memphis were just kinda tired of him. His last appearance was on the Jerry Lawler show after thanksgiving doing a pretaped promo. He already had the beginnings of the cancer then.

Amazing movie, one of my favorites to be honest and the discrepancies never really bothered me as it didn't detract from the film in a way that it ruined it. I know they got the timeline a little wrong but there is a limit to what can be included in movies and things need to be condensed for time but at least in Man on the Moon they did it in a way that didn't take away from the story unlike a lot of films that have been ruined by it.

Kinda weird that they cast Danny Devito as George Shapiro (Andy's agent) just for the simple fact that Danny DeVito is someone who already had a major role in real life as Kaufman's co-star on Taxi. I kinda wish in the movie whenever Andy did something that risked his job at Taxi George would say something like "What are you doing? You're risking a role on a network sitcom! A network sitcom that let's you work with the hilarious and dashingly handsome Danny DeVito!"
The Memphis stuff was condensed immensely (basically weeks of promos condensed into minutes of ringside trash talk) but stuff like that is expected in bio-flicks. I highly recommend the documentary Andy Kaufman: I'm From Hollywood to get a better understanding of his Memphis run.
