I read that Brian Gewirtz is supposedly the writer of Rock's material in WWE, so does that mean Rock regurgitates everything Gewirtz writes, or is it a collaborative effort that gets filtered by McMahon into the stuff we see on television?
Has the Rock ever come up with his own material?

I would imagine that Rock has a large amount of leash when it comes to his promos

Well Gewirtz didn't appear on the scene until late 1999, so I wouldn't say Rock has never come up with his own material.

That being said, The Rock's promos are basically throwbacks to the his heyday and nothing more - so in that sense they are accomplishing what they're intended to do: "Oh yeah - remember the Rock and the Attitude Era?" I bet the Rock and Gewirtz work together on stuff. Brian pitches, the Rock modifies and puts the final product together - like a writer and showrunner on a show.

I think mrbanana actually meant firing someone for writing lines that get a great audience reaction would be rather foolish, regardless of personal opinion of the material. I agree with you over how the writing/delivery works too, and I enjoy what comes from them, but I'm very aware of how they feel like they sort of don't fit with the current feel of most guys promos. Not that it's a bad thing in itself given makes Rock stand out and appear like some sort of wrestling god (/JBL) on most occasions just from fan response.

Gewirtz doesn't "write" his promos. Gewirtz is a good friend of The Rock's and is basically a filter for the promos. Helps him tweak them basically.

Yeah, the live audience just crapped all over it, didn't they? Ahem. Just because the live audience liked it doesn't mean it wasn't garbage. The live audience would cheer anything Rock said just because it's The Rock. If it was someone like Jinder Mahal saying the same stuff it would be met with the silence and/or boring chants it deserves. Yet for some reason, just because it's Rock saying it, people lap it up.

Food item + animal body part + rectal insertion = Rock promo.

Can't underestimate the power of great delivery. So-so material delivered amazingly > great material delivered so-so. From what I've seen of Jinder Mahal, that would be a case of so-so material delivered terribly.

Although, point still stands, turrible material delivered amazingly can get over; hell, even I didn't find The Tooth Fair completely horrid, solely because the Rock could make the material work. Didn't hurt that Dench and McFarlane were in it, though.

It's the Rock. Anything he says is golden.
The live crowds like it because it's funny. And until you get a negative crowd reaction from it, then it remains golden because it's doing what it's supposed to do. If he says Punk is a cookie-puss, then he's a cookie-puss.
Or have we forgotten Fruity Pebbles?

So how did the Rock gain such a devoted following? It's same logical fallacy as when people say Hogan and Austin were only famous because they were part of a boom period. Duh, what do you think made the boom period?
