I keep reading about RSS feeds and stuff, and when I see them on website, they only seem to show a very simplified version of the site or something, but people seem to be frequently asking sites that don't have them to include it, so what does it do? And how does one use it?

RSS (short for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary), is a big help in how one searches for specific content. One doesn't have to keep checking back on web sites they visit on a regular basis for updated content.
Updates are delivered via a "feed reader," which is a simple way to view all your feeds at one time via one interface. When new content is posted, the reader updates shortly afterward (usually 30 minutes or less).

From what I can tell, they add a little safely-ignored link to the corner of the site.

Lately I really love using Googl reader and RSS to keep track of my favorite podcasts.

Like for example, if a site just changes its logo, does the reader show that a new file has been updated?

Also if you like webcomics or want new articles from a site basically emailed to your browser it works great for that.
