This may not be a surprise to those that follow movies, but it used to be the other way around. What do you think happened? I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just kinda surprising.
Mama was #1 this weekend and the estimated that 61% of the audience were female.
Thoughts?

I need to meet these women, because nobody wants to watch horror movies with me.

Mama seems to be a pretty woman centered movie, with the two girls and the girlfriend and I guess probably the spirit of the dead mother running around. That's a lot more than you usually get in any kind of movie, especially unusual as they don't really seem to be fetishized as a sexual object for men like your AJ Lees. My guess is that it has a lot of the ingredients that drew women to The Others.

Because horror is the bread and butter of the date movie going all the way back to the Drive-In era.
That, and at least in the circle of friends I know, girls tend to pal around and do stuff together way more than guys do. That includes visiting the cinema.

I've noticed this as well the past few years. Honestly they like the cheap scares and like to drag a guy or their boyfriend for a date plus they bring their other friends. I've been on dates to see a horror movie and she brings one or two or three friends as well. It makes those dates a warzone.

Love horror movies (and novels) and always have ever since I was a preteen. When I was younger, it was all about the thrill of seeing a protagonist navigate an impossible, terrifying situation and come out on top (I never did like horror movies with nihilistic endings). There was a real triumph of the human spirit in some of these things, like the Exorcist where the doubting priest finds strength inside himself for the sake of the little girl. Now that I'm older, I love the more quiet, ghost or supernatural type of horror (El Orfanato, Insidious, Sinister), things where there's a mystery to unravel. I like it best when someone is putting themselves in these scary situations to save a loved one (and either succeeds or there's some indication of a happy-ish ending). Campy stuff like Drag Me to Hell is fun, too.
I don't go in for realistic torture porn... I think once you reach a certain age and have seen some crappy things happen in real life, stuff like that just isn't amusing or titillating anymore. But the classic slasher stuff is still awesome, and anything psychological/supernatural/spiritual, I'm there for.

Maybe not following the bullshit morality tale made women more inclined to watch them.

Women like to go for a good scream. My wife loves those type of movies. I don't mind watching them with her; I'm the one she grabs when she gets spooked by something (even if she seen the Nightmare On Elm Street series 100 times over).

It seems like horror and comedy are the only two gender neutral genres. Romance films tend to have predominately women audiences, action tends to have predominately male audiences, horror and comedy seems to be the perfect date movies as neither sex seems to be opposed to these genres.

As explained in the "state of the horror movie" thread, horror movie quality has gone down. So that dumbing down of horror flicks explains why the women folk have turned up recently. Imma right, fellas?! *ducks from flying projectiles.*

Good point, but I think women also helped make Texas Chainsaw Massacre #1 Women love Leather... face? Funny story. Gunner Hansen who played the original Leatherface in 1974, relayed a story in which he took a date to the premiere and they didn't really know each other that well, so after the movie, she didn't say much of anything to him on the way home, so when they got to her place, he asked to come in and she closed the door on him.

i love horror flicks. last movie i watched in the theater was The Collection. totally gruesome. loved it. held onto my man's arm the whole time. it was great.
I'm not a fan of chick flicks. give me a good scary movie or shit blowing up, please. my guy friends do not like these movies. i don't know what their deal is.
most of the time, i go to movies with my girl friend Kelly. She loves the action flicks too.

Every and I mean EVERY girl on OKcupid says they love horror movies. I don't like horror movies because they don't scare me. I don't know, there isn't much to them that I find interesting. The Exorcist was the only movie that scared me.
