Just a quick thing that I've been wondering about this for a while. When it comes to movies based on TV shows, games, books etc. they completely diverge from it or they either follow it up very closely. Though they are either good or bad movies from the former, They are rarely any bad ones from the latter. Where there any movies that follow up their source material very closely and still managed to suck?
One movie I can think of is I Love You, Beth Cooper. I haven't read the book, even though I heard positive things about it and the movie makes me not want to read it.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. From what I can recall, having read the book a very very long time ago and seeing the Burton film a long time ago, it didn't really seem to be less deviated from the book than the other film. The stuff about the dentist father, all the Oompa Loompas being identical, the fact that it was just kinda shitty in general, it 'felt' less like the book to me than the classic film we all adore and love (different it too is from the novel).

I read I Love You Beth Cooper after I saw the movie. It was close to source, but so incredibly better as a book.

I was told the Twilight films are faithful to their source material

The Les Mis musical. Sometimes deep cuts are needed to make your passion project watchable.

it's not terrible so much as mediocre, but Watchmen was slavishly close to the book and still missed the themes of the book by a country mile. V for Vendetta likewise was very close to the book but still completely missed the point. as much of a curmudgeon as Alan Moore is, I can kinda understand why he doesn't want his books made into movies. even when they get it right they get it wrong.

I tried to watch the complete Watchmen Blu Ray with the motion comic and everything inserted into it. Man, is it boring.

Arguably the first two Harry Potter movies, as they didn't know what was going to be important later on in the series they kept as close to the books as possible and the movies suffered as a result.
Conversely Order of the Phoenix was a wasted opportunity as they missed out some of the best scenes from the book or cut them down too much.

The Stephen King directed Shining is much closer to the book than the Kubrick one. And much, much worse.

Mortal Kombat Annihilation is a pretty loose adaptation of MK3. Emphasis on loose, though. It did make Raiden and Shao Kahn brothers, after all.

As someone who didn't read the books, this was my favorite of the series. As opposed to the last 2 movies, which were my least favorite movies of the year.

I admit Sorcerer's Stone isn't a great film, but Chamber of Secrets is 2nd best in the series, IMO. Absolutely loved it.
