Vince McMahon claimed that RAW has been watched by more than 4 billion people. Raw is split into three shows so that they can claim that twice as many people watch WWE programming (or at least that they have THREE really popular shows instead of just one), so it's not really new. But claiming that FOUR BILLION PEOPLE have watched WWE shows, a number that was OBVIOUSLY reached by just adding up the viewership numbers of every individual episode of RAW is so obnoxiously assinine that it's been juggling around in my head for weeks.
So, my first question is... Does Vince actually BELIEVE that absurd number? Like, does he get out of bed in the morning and think, "My legacy is secure. 2/3rds of the population of the Earth have seen my flagship show. There has never been an entertainment creator appreciated by more people. Leonardo? Shakespear? None of them could hope to match 4 billion people. I'm...I'm just so great.
Or does he know that saying things like "Four billion people watched RAW" a program that is the "longest running weekly episodic program in television history" is just complete and utter manufactured garbage?
But, man! Four billion people! That takes some special kind of...person...to come right out and say. To claim that FOUR BILLION PEOPLE watch the show, not just, you know, about ten million people who come and go. So, claiming that repeat viewers count as unique indviduals, what other insane stats can we come up with?
I teach about 20 classes of 30 children every week. That means that I have about 600 students. Going by VINCE MATH, excluding holidays, I teach 24,000 students every year!
What else?
Oh! I ride the train to and from work! And it's full to capacity! You can fit 1,500 people on a train at rush hour. I take those twice a day, every day! 1,500 X 2 X 365 = 1.9 million. Multiply that by the number of years I've been working (6) and we're up to nearly 12 million! But, some people get on and off during the trip. So, assume a 100% turnover rate at each of the 10 stops from my home to my work. 12,000,000 X 10 = 120 million people! I have ridden the train with nearly HALF the population of my country! How about that! What a swell guy I am! My legacy is secure!

I think it's no different than when you see a McDonald's with a "X million people served" on their sign. They aren't meaning it to say a million different, unique people have eaten there, that'd be impossible to figure, they're just saying they've had that many views. For all the jokes we make about Vince, he's not stupid, a stupid person wouldn't have had the vision, ambition, and know-how to create all that he has. There is no possible way to track how many individual people have watched any show, ever. All you can do is base your statistics off ratings, which figures how many people are in a house and how many households watched this particular show. That alone leaves a huge margin of error. Even PPV buys, which are way more accurate than ratings statistics in my opinion, still don't tell you how many people from each purchase watched that show. 4 billion people have watched simply means that based off estimated ratings and PPV buys, 4 billion viewings of their product have been watched, whether that be 1 person watching the show 4 billion times, or 4 billion people only watching once, or somewhere in between. That's all they're saying, 4 billion viewings have been made (and that's a largely estimated figure in my mind.)

I think Donald Trump would claim 1 million people auditioned for a season of The Apprentice at it's peak, which seems silly considering American Idol at it's peak never claimed close to that number.

DID YOU KNOW:
Triple H has buried more people than are alive today.
Also Professor, what's the standard deviation of the example you gave?

Do some people just look for s*** to nitpick about when it comes to WWE? By this point I would be disappointed if they didn't.

Do some people just look for s*** to nitpick about when it comes to WWE? I think it's worth talking about because when they make claims like this it tells us two important things about the people running the company. 1. They aren't above lying their asses off. 2. They think their audience is stupid, because when they lie they really stretch believability past its limit. If your goal is to drive a certain percentage of viewers away from your product, insulting their intelligence sure can't hurt in achieving that goal.

So does that mean I'm actually 700 people? I was thinking it was starting to get crowded in here.

93,000. WM3. Enough said. 93,000 people at Wrestlemania 3... We can work with that. There were 12 matches on the card that night, so, using WWE's logic: Wrestlemania 3's matches were watched live by 1,116,000 people. What else do we have? Assuming an average of a two hour commute to the venue (an estimate that offsets longer trips with plenty of local attendees), then, by WWE logic (and rounding up) fans travelled over 200,000 miles, just to watch Wrestlemania III.

Also Professor, what's the standard deviation of the example you gave? Since the numbers were all the same (1,500) the standard deviaation would be zero.

MORE PEOPLE HAVE WATCHED RAW THAN LAST YEARS SUPERBOWL! They actually did something very similar to that last year, when they claimed more people attended every RAW of that year, combined, than Super Bowl XLVI. Every RAW of the year....to ONE event. I wish I was making this up.
