X-Wing vs Tiefighter Wing Commander To a lesser extent : Star Fox
They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but they all were awesome games where you hoped into a ship and gleefully mauled your opponents with overwhelming firepower.
XWing and Wing Commander took it one direction with customization and free flight, while Star Fox took it another direction essentially making a 3D tunnel version of bullet hell. Both styles are incredibly fun in their own right.
Where have all the Fighter/Flight games gone? Am I blind? Or hasn't these been a good one in many years. Freespace was probably the last decent one I've seen.
I'm pissed now.

I can't believe we haven't seen a new Starfox. What's up with that?

Because those games were easy to make with early 3D engines they had. The ships had few polygons and not much of animation.

Superman 64 brought shame to the genre. Nobody wants to risk it anymore.
I don't know if that's the actual answer, but it's the one I'm going with.

Because the allied AI was generally crap which tended to make every other level an escort mission.

The X-series is still plugging away. And is pretty damn awesome.

Hawx was an okay game on the current generation of consoles.

I can't believe we haven't seen a new Starfox. What's up with that? Somebody must hate money. I heard a rumor that Miyamoto isn't a fan of the Star Fox concept. He wants the games to have that "open feel" adventure style. ....which is stupid. The fixated rail shooters like the first 2 games was a ton of fun. Star Fox 64 is probably my most revisited N64 game...SO much fun. The follow up games were garbage though.

I do recall the console versions of Starlancer and Crismson Skies being more than passable.

Last flight game I remember was Ace Combat: Assault Horizon and it was terrible. I'm a huge fan of the earlier games but Dogfight Mode is my least favourite thing ever next to Nazis.

Anyone remember Top Gun for the NES. Between screwing up the mid air refuel and crashing when trying to land on the aircraft carrier it pretty much sucked.

I don't live in the US so I have no way of knowing if this is a joke or not, but I honestly mean no offense here. I know it's going to sound like I'm being sarcastic or something, but that's not my intention. I just can't think of a better way to phrase my question. Do games with an anthropomorphic team of mercenaries fighting giant robots in space really bring back memories of 9/11? I'd think it was more like Star Wars.

Yeah, I miss flight games. I enjoyed Assault Horizon's online mode but it was nowhere near as good as the past games. They seemed to dumb it down and bring in gimmicks to appeal to the CoD crowd instead of just focussing on developing a great flight game like past Ace Combats.

I want a helicopter game. I loved playing the Counter Strike games on (I believe) Genesis & PlayStation. Also, I found that I really enjoyed using the UAV in MW2*, so something like that would be cool. A game mixed with bombing missions, dogfights, UAVs, Gunships etc would be cool. Basically an Air Force game. Anyone remember Top Gun for the NES. Between screwing up the mid air refuel and crashing when trying to land on the aircraft carrier it pretty much sucked. I could refuel no problem. It was the landing that sucked. If you did manage to land, the second level sucked because either your missles weren't strong enough or you didn't have enough of the bigger ones. If by some reason you made it to the second aircraft carrier you crashed anyway. I've never made it past the second landing. Dammit. *For those that saw the thread last week, I did eventually pick up MW2. Finished the campaign over 3 nights, & played around with the other stuff too. I did like it better than the first one, & maybe better than 3 too, but its been a while since I last played.
