Like the title says, my dog finally died today. He was 14 years old. I wasn't there to see him die this morning, but my parents suspect that it must have been a heart attack or some type of stroke as it happened suddenly since he had been perfectly fine up until this morning.
I came to grips with the fact that he was close to death last year as he had a really bad case of arthritis in his hips and spine; could hardly get up but he fought through it for an extra year. He was actually looking fairly spry and alive before his death today. All in all though, I'm just really bummed out that the dog that essentially grew up with me (I got him when I was 6; I'm 20 now) won't be in the backyard anymore waiting for me to lick my hand or my face.

I'm sorry to hear that man. I was in the same position as you were last spring when my dog that I had since I was 6 passed away at 15 years old when I was also 20. She had a really bad heart problem that seemed to have nearly gone away right before she passed away. It hurts like hell because they have become a part of your family. It will certainly take some time to get used to considering how long he was in your life.
What kind of dog was he?

I lost my dog a few weeks ago and I'm also 20, so I completely understand what you are feeling right now. I had come to terms with it too, but it's just like a part of you has gone missing. It...gets easier and it doesn't, if that makes sense. But I think that it never feeling completely 'fine' is good too.
I'm really sorry for your loss and I hope you feel better man.

I'm sorry to hear this. It's an awful feeling.
I had a cat who I grew up with and when she died it was like a kick in the gut even though I knew it was coming. Nothing ever really makes it easy. You can prepare yourself all you want but when the moment comes it's always awful.
Treasure the memories he gave you and keep him close to your heart.

Sorry man. Pet deaths can be extremely rough. At least you can take comfort in knowing he lived a long, full life.

I think the thing that bugs me the most is that I wasn't there to say goodbye. The last image I have of my dog is placing his lifeless corpse on a cart at the local city pound to be cremated.

Sorry to hear this. When you have a pet for that long,it's especially rough. As the others have said, you can take solace in the fact that he did live a long life.

At least he was able to see, along with you, the Kings win the Cup.

I'm very, very sorry for your loss. I lost my best friend last July and it still hurts like you wouldn't believe.

You have my condolences. The only time I have cried over a death was when my dog got bit by a snake and had to be send to the land of mail men and milkbones.

One of the worst things in life is a pets death. I love dogs with all my heart and I know that it's tough. But he's in a better place now.

My condolences. I know the feeling all too well, it never gets easier. Just think of all the good times you had with him, hold onto those memories rather than the ones of him ill and sad.

I am very sorry for your loss. It will be a year March 9th, since my dog died at just 5 years old. My mom told me the loss was like losing a child. I still look to see if he's in the window when I am coming home, even though we have 2 dogs still, I look for Pete. I will keep you in thought.

I'm really sorry to hear that, man. Losing my first dog was one of the most painful things I ever experienced.
