Elijah Wood is an interesting casting choice, but I don't know if they can catch the grimy feel of late 70's early 80's NYC the way William Lustig did.
I want to watch this but haven't gotten around to it.

hmm... could be interesting. I'm sure Elijah would knock it out of the park, we already know he can play creepy psychopaths. that said, the grimy, sleazy feel of the movie is part of makes it work and I just don't know if you can re-capture it with modern film techniques. modern film is too polished. it's part of the reason the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remakes don't work either.

What's the point in remaking Maniac? It's not really a popular franchise. Is the Blue Underground audience really large enough to support this endeavor? And if you were gonna remake Lustig why not go after Maniac Cop?

Judging by how creepy his presence came off in Sin City without the use of any dialogue, I'm pretty sure he'd do a decent job here.

The trailers looked pretty good for it. And I don't mind Elijah Wood as a casting choice, he's a good actor. I'm just not sure he can pull off "sleazy" the way that Joe Spinnell could.

I hope they got Michael Sembello to make the original version of this song like it was supposed to be for Maniac and not flashdance.

Elijah already did the evil serial killing nerd in Sin City. They needed someone closer to Joe Spinell in appearance. Like, uh, Jack Black. Or, that guy from Balls of Steel that every thinks looks like Jack Black. Or maybe that's just me.

They're going for something different, which is what a good remake should do. It would be horrible to just try to redo everything the original did and cast actors that look like the original cast.
